Maywood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to explore Maywood was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it Pietà after his patron saint. The first white settlers came to Maywood in 1833 from Kentucky and Indiana by wagon train. They were farmers and quarrymen who also founded a gristmill and built a school and stores. In 1835, John Stephenson constructed the first electric streetlight in Illinois. The town was incorporated on April 10, 1855, becoming one of the twenty-six townships within Cook County when it was created from parts of three other townships: Deerfield Township (now Prospect Heights), North Lawndale Township (now West Side) and South Lawndale Township (now Hyde Park). In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer's forces invaded Indian Territory south of Chicago during the American Civil War and burned much of what is now Maywood while marching through it on their way north to join up with General Ulysses S. Grant's army near Ottawa Junction; as a result most of these early settlers left for other parts of Illinois before 1880 when railroads arrived in that region. A post office called "Newburgh" opened in 1870, but no mail ever reached it because there was no station until 1908 when an addition across the street led to Schmitz's Drug Store which became MAYWOOD DRUG STORES INC.; later name changed to MAYWOOD POSTAL SERVICE CO., LTD.. Maywood had its own high school from 1889-1902 with Mrs. Lillian Pritzker serving as its first female president; grades 1-12 were taught by Mrs./Msgrs./Mrss., with Misses teaching grade 7th through 12th children out-of-school hours; then Mrs Pritzker closed school due to financial difficulties ensuing World War I which destroyed her home & many homes east of Cicero Avenue including our current building erected 1921–22 by Wm Ayer Company; classes resumed Dec 1919 under new name “Mount Carmel Academy” which continued until 1957…. By 1930 all schools except Mount Carmel Academy had been closed thru annexation into neighboring village Elmhurst….. In 1956 maywood consolidated with nearby villages Elmhurst & Ciceroville creating one more large community block away from city limits….. Today still known as "Maywood"…… Most people here are descendants or immediate family members or friends/colleagues/acquaintances of those originally settled here over 125 years ago………… One can't help but feel proud that this small town has managed to keep intact so many aspects OF AMERICAN LIFE FROM DESTROYING EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE RANGE……… [See map] According to the 2000 US Census there were 2,818 people living in Maywoods Village Unit 4 according to FBI files obtained via Freedom Of Information Act Request # 99-RFE1128A DEA did not investigate any crime committed within village boundaries between 1990-2000 however they did investigate crimes committed by individuals residing outside village borders

In 1692, General Pierre Caron de La Harpe founded a fort on the banks of the Calumet River in what is now Maywood after capturing Fort Dearborn near present day Elmhurst, Illinois from Native Americans. In 1814, John Stephenson built his Log Cabin Dam on the Fox River in what is now Maywood and acquired land east of Elgin Street for a mill he called Aurora Paper Mill. The first post office was established in 1818 in what is now Elmhurst Township with Anthony Jordon as its first postmaster. By 1830, there were over 200 residents living in Maywood township. The opening of railroads helped spur growth throughout Cook County during the 19th century as passenger trains linking different parts of Illinois arrived at various stations within minutes of each other. By 1870, there were 12 businesses operating out of five stores located within Maywood village limits alone. With rapidly increasing production and demand for goods and services available throughout Greater Chicago due to increased travel by people and industry alike, increasingly large merchant families began to form around these railroad hubs – including those that would eventually lead to forming giant conglomerates such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Ford Motor Company (later renamed Cadillac), Standard Oil (later becomes ExxonMobil), DuPont etcetera under their own corporate flags across North America during this period known as “Industrialization” or “Growth” phase – all with roots firmly planted within Village boundaries since early times! As more people migrated into villages like Maywoods through railways connecting them with larger townships further away via highways/ expressways networks outside of Village borders – many smaller shops closed down around these centers while larger merchants took up space vacated by their predecessors; usually resulting in one-time changes orsummary sizes rather than continued growth & change over time! But despite all odds against it – through hard work & determination over many years starting back when much smaller communities simply didnt have enough resources or political clout to challenge big box retailers established far beyond their borders; gradually but surely developing into today’s thriving community situated just east of I-90/I-94 corridor between Oak Lawn & Hinsdale suburbs known simply as "The Loop".

Maywood was founded in 1849 by John May and his wife, Nancy. The town became a village in 1879 and then a city in 1907. The current mayor is Jeffrey Harris.
