The first post office was established at Morse Village on November 1, 1815 by Amos Kendall (the brother of Dr. Samuel Morse). In 1834 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and his Vice President John C. Frémont visited Melrose Park during his campaign trip across Illinois; this visit has been cited as an early example of presidential campaigning in America. After being re-elected president multiple times (1856–58), Lincoln decided to spend his last year before leaving office vacationing at Soldier's Grove located near present day West Lawn Drive and Addison Road outside of Springfield where he delivered two lectures on April 14th 1865 about how Great American Roads were necessary if we were going to compete with Europe: "A Model National Road" while also touring old farmsteads which had been taken over by Northern troops as barracks during the Civil War known as "Hilton Garden Head". This speech made him so unpopular with some abolitionist groups that they rioted against him at Soldier's Grove later that night which led to him winning reelection without having gone into Chicago where many people expected him to do so given his popularity there among Abolitionists & other radicals who considered himself part of a progressive movement beyond politics&gave rise to rumors that he may have won because only Radical Democrats could vote &orsexactly such allegations helped lead Republican Ulysses S Grant to win election 44 years later after much ado about nothing! During World War II large amounts of helium were produced at Wernher von Braun’s Braun Research Center just outside town limits; it was used for both aircraft production (ejection seats) as well as artillery shells being shot offsite outfitted with warheads inside small tanks called “thunderbolts” developed specifically for this purpose primarily by Oberndorf munitions company owned by Wernher von Braun himself – making Melrose Park one of few places within hours’ radius worldwide where ballistic missiles were actually created! In recent years however much attention has been paid not just to local history but also new development around town including a 21st century high school built next door – providing additional community amenities opportunities especiallygiven its location sandwiched between downtown Chicago & Oak Forest!
