The first store in the town was built on the corner of Queen and Prairie Streets. By 1851, there were six stores in the town. Ammunition manufacturers began to arrive in Melrose Park beginning in the 1840s. The first ammunition manufacturer to open a store here was John Rhea & Son who manufactured cannons and shot shells for use by artillerymen. In 1865, Samuel Colt opened a gunsmith shop here and began manufacturing handguns which would become known as “Cowboy Guns”. This factory produced over 1 million pistols between 1868-1892 inclusive. By 1888, all of the ammunition manufacturers had closed down within the city limits due to prohibitionism laws passed at that time by state legislatures. However, some small businesses continued to exist until after World War II when automobiles became popular and ammunition production ceased entirely in Illinois due to dwindling resources. The area that is now Melrose Park was originally called Backville. The original settlers were farmers who came to the area in the early 1800s. They started a farm and then built a house there. In 1838, they named their property after Lord Melbourne, who had just become Prime Minister of Great Britain. One of the first things that people did in Melrose Park was to build a school. The first school was built on what is now State Street. It served students from Kindergarten through Grade 8. In 1875, someone donated land to make way for a high school. That high school was renamed Abraham Lincoln High School in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. In 1923, the City Council decided that it would be better if all the schools in Melrose Park were combined into one large school district. This idea was Favorited because at that time there were only six schools in Melrose Park and each one had its own Superintendent! This made it easier for people to get around town and learn about all of the different schools in our district! The first superintendent of this new consolidated district was Mrs. John Fenton Weems-Sheffield (1923-27). She led us through some tough times during World War II because so many people left our district to go into service during World War II! However, she also managed to keep our district running well despite these challenges! After Mrs. Weems-Sheffield’s retirement (1927), we had Mrs….Celia Slatkin (1927-30) as our next superintendent until we reached our current situation with Ms…..Deborah Ladd (2001-03). Deborah Ladd has been here since 2003 and she is currently leader of our District 5th Grade Academy which serves students from PreKindergarten throughGrade 8!! Our current Superintendent is Anthony Auerbach who began his career on September 1st, 2013!!!

The city of Melrose Park was one of the five original towns in Kane County, Illinois. It was named for the plums that were grown in the area. The town began to be developed around a man-made lake that was formed by damming up the Fox River. The first post office in Melrose Park was established on July 1, 1872. The first store opened on October 12, 1872. A water tower and pumping station were constructed in 1875 and 1889, respectively. Melrose Park experienced its most significant growth during World War I when it became home to an airfield used by the United States Army Air Service. After the war, Melrose Park became a center for social welfare as it became known for its high levels of education and wealth inequality.
