The area now known as Lincolnwood became a part of Melrose Park when it was annexed by the city in 1907. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson delivered his Fourteen Points speech on behalf of newly reelected Illinois Governor James K. Cox before traveling to Chicago for an election victory celebration at McCormick Place. One notable event from this trip was Wilson's address to a joint session of Congress assembled at Ulysses S Grant's old home on Michigan Avenue – which successfully pushed through passage of legislation creating public schools throughout Illinois without a statehouse vote (a precedent that would be violated more than fifty years later with Proposition 8). Today, Melrose Park is home to many famous people such as Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates – both residents for over 30 years and some who have resided there for centuries or longer. Other famous residents include tennis player Greg Norman and racing driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.. The park also hosts annual events like golf tournaments and baseball games; these events draw thousands of spectators from all over the country each year.
