Mokena, Illinois is a small town located in the state of Illinois. The population was 3,717 at the 2010 census. Mokena is one of eight towns in Sangamon County, Illinois. Mokena is the only incorporated town in Sangamon County and it is also one of the few communities outside of Chicago that has its own school district. The first settlers to Mokena were from Hungary and Austria. They arrived during the 1850s and 1860s and established a farm on what is now Park Avenue. The farmers here grew corn, wheat, oats, potatoes and other crops. In 1876, they built a log cabin on School Street which still stands today. The first post office in Mokena was established in 1879. It was called Parkville because it was across the street from where their farm now sits. In 1881, John Fenton started a blacksmith shop in Mokena which became known as Fenton's forge or blacksmithy station. This business served as an important link between African-American residents and white people in Mokena until around World War II when it closed down due to lack of customers or competition from more local businesses. After World War II ended, African Americans began to move out of Makena for various reasons including racism towards them by many whites throughout America; however, some remained behind for economic reasons such as being able to operate their own businesses due to zoning laws that discriminated against blacks at that time although these laws have since been changed). In 1960-1961 alone, there were 2 outbreaks of violence within Indian Country involving Black Americans living near University Circle (now part of downtown) and Native American Indians who resided along US Highway 20/I-55 just south of present day Kankakee Lake Shore Drive - this period is generally known as "Mokedan Time". Prior to this point most violence within Indian Country occurred among American Indian tribes themselves rather than any outsider groups such as Black Americans who often found themselves victimised by their fellow tribesmen regardless of status or lack thereof Later that year changes came about with amendments made to the United States Constitution which granted voting rights auxiliaries like women and citizens Of color (Caucasians had not yet received full citizenship rights until after 1920). This gave impetus for locals within Indian Country ( primarily those neighboring University Circle) to demand representation through Congress beginning with Elijah Muhammad's famous “Mount Holyoke Speeches” campaign during the early 1960s onwards Some key leaders involved with this movement include Waseem Littlejohn (founder & president emeritus - Islamic Society Of North America), Abdul Hakim Murad & Mohamad Ahmad Shakir (membership members - National Advisory Council To Preserve And Enhance Islamic Heritage)), Malik Zulu Shabazz(presidential candidate - National Action Network))& Bilal Yousefzai.(member - Subcommittee On Civil Rights Hearings Subcommittee On Civil Rights Hearings before House Committee on Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime And Delinquency) After Elijah Muhammad's death his widow sister Sandra Jarwid sought legal action seeking control over Nation Of Islam property adjacent to her home complex where he had lived prioritizing education over self-promotion & political power over religious beliefs consequentially leading up troublespotting later led by Malcolm X & Huey Newton following initial demonstrations organized by Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., et al After several years she lost an appeal based largely upon evidence provided by security forces deployed at her home including pepper sprayered into her window resulting in no arrests ensuing peaceful protests eventually culminating with her eviction from her home complex following scuffles between activists & police officers ensued leaving 8 people dead including Mrs Jarwid herself subsequently becoming headhunted by Chicago crime syndicatesters Cassius Clayborngoodson alias 'The Entertainer' Today there are several mosques open within walking distance or satellite services available making worshipers diverse without havingto leave their homes country side while maintaining close ties with family& community
