In 2007, Mokena began to experience an increase in crime rates due to its location within walking distance of many high-crime areas such as Lawndale and Prospect Park South. As result of this issue, Mayor Tom Barrett announced that he would begin working on plans to establish new security measures for the community including cameras and fencing around all public areas within city limits. This announcement came after several incidents where criminals had been able to gain access to our local businesses through easy access to our neighborhoods outside of town limits
Mokena is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,847 at the 2010 census. Mokena was founded in 1855 by George H. Heimer and his wife, Anna May Heimer. It was named for John Mokena of Ireland who died in 1824. In 1871, J.G. Bemis organized the first grain elevator in Mokena with $5,000 from himself and other investors. By 1907 there were five elevator companies operating in Kane County with a total capacity of 6 million bushels of corn per day. Mokena had its start as a railroad stop on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad line between Chicago and Rockford; it became known as "Mokena Junction". The first post office was established at Mokena on January 3, 1856; modern day Makena has the distinction of being one of only two townships (the other being Washington Township) in Kane County that did not have its own post office until after World War II when mail service moved to local newspapers beginning on October 1st 1945 statewide! The Chicago & Northwestern Railway abandoned their tracks near Makena in 1906 due to budget cuts but new tracks were built east of town just west of Interstate 80 where they continue today as part of the I-80 network
