In 1865, Mokena became a township within Kane County when it was organized as part of the larger county. It remained that way until 1974 when it consolidated with other townships into Kane County's current boundaries. Mokena has been home to several mills since its founding; one still stands today (the John A Milner Mill). The mill produced flour for local markets and also manufactured cheese products such as Boursin cheese and gouda until 1978 when it closed down due to lack of demand. Today there are only a few remnants of this old mill left around town- most notably one large wheel which remains in operation as a grain elevator; however much of the machinery has been removed for safety reasons over time (see photo below).

In 1876, Mokena became an incorporated village and began to serve as a bedroom community for Chicagoans working in nearby towns such as Rockford and Aurora. In 1912, following annexation by Chicago, Mokena became an official city with its own police department and mayor. Mokena has experienced many changes over its history including being used as a military post during World War II and becoming an agricultural center after it was designated as such in 1974 by President Gerald Ford according to his Executive Order No. 10629 which made it one of five major American cities receiving designation from then-President Richard Nixon. today's economy relies heavily on agriculture with cattle farming accounting for most of the jobs generated in Mokena while manufacturing remains a minor component of local GDP
Mokena is a city in and the county seat of Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 149,824 at the 2010 census. Mokena is located on the west bank of the Kankakee River. It is bordered by Calumet City to the north, Champaign Township to the east, andNormal Township to the south. The river forms part of Mokena's eastern border. Mokena was named for George Makeney, an early settler in this area. The first post office called Mokena was established in 1836 and served until 1867. In 1868, it became one of three cities in Kane County when Normal Township was split off from Champaign Township. In 1912, Leland Stanford bought land adjacent to what is now McKennan Park in Mokena for $1 million cash and built a large mansion there which he called Home Park (now known as Stanford Mansion). He used his money to help build other communities near Mokena such as La Grange Park (now known as Villa Park), Downers Grove Village (now known as Glenview), Oak Lawn Village (now known as Arlington Heights), Mundelein Village (now known as Highland Park), and Prospect Heights
