It grew rapidly during World War II as soldiers from nearby Decatur battled along the river for control of strategic points upstream. In 1951, Mokena became an incorporated village under the name of Johnstown when it merged with neighboring communities Keokuk and Winfield. The community was named for Maurice Keane, an Englishman who had come to America that year as a steamboat pilot and trader. In 1868, Mokena became part of the then-new Town of Palatine Township when it was organized from parts of Cook County. In 1913, Mokena residents voted to create their own school board; this decision made it possible for children living in other towns in McHenry County to attend high school here instead of having to go to schools in Kane or DuPage counties. The first high school classes were held in 1915; by 1922, all public schools within one mile (1 km) of Makena had been built or were under construction. In 1925, when Cook County merged with McHenry County, Mokena became its new county seat; until then it had been located within Kane County.
