At its peak development around 1900 Montgomery boasted over 300 residences – though many have since been replaced or demolished.
Today Downtown Montgomery contains only a few remnants including Jeffery Dickey’s historic site map from 1906 still on display inside City Hall Annex.

In 1951, the Montgomery Post Office closed due to an increase in mail volume from nearby Carbondale. The community experienced significant growth during World War II as part of the Chicago-based African American military forces that fought in both wars. A black housing project was constructed near the post office in 1946 and served as a base for soldiers until 1954. After the war ended, many of the black veterans moved away from Montgomery but some continued living there until their deaths or move out of state afterwards. The area has since been abandoned and remains rural farming country with few traces of its former population

Polk's inauguration as president of the United States.
