Montgomery is part of the Carbondale-Normal metropolitan area and is bordered by Normal to the east, Peoria to the south, and Moline to the west. The town was founded in 1834 by Welsh immigrants who had come overland from Wales. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn and beans on their farmsteads. By 1840, however, there were also substantial numbers of people living in Montgomery because of its location on Illinois's Western border. In 1847, John Higginson donated land to make up for a loss he had incurred when his company failed to win permission from Southwestern Railroad to build a railroad through Carbondale. This donation became known as "Higginson's Hill". In 1870, a post office was established at Montgomery with Wm Hargrave as its first mail carrier. In 1881, the town celebrated its centennial with an exhibition of local art that included paintings by James Fenton and Augustus Saint-Gaudens. According to the 2010 census, Montgomery has a population of 1,514 people and 321 households: 98% white; 2% black or African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Hispanic or Latino; and 3% other race
