In 1872, another ordinance granted local government to the townspeople after a referendum rejected an offer from then-Governor Richard M. Daley to give Cook County central government control over municipalities within its borders. The growth of suburban areas spurring downtown business closures has led to increased competition for jobs that formerly lay within walking or biking distance of most residents now found deep inside Loop 610 north or south of I-90/I-88 Exit 51 or just outside downtown on Kedzie Avenue near Forest Glen Shopping Center (the “Downtown” shopping district today). The first Europeans to visit Morton Grove were French fur traders who landed there in 1795 on their way from Quebec City. They named it "Morton" for Captain John Morton of HMS Beagle who had explored North America during that year's voyage. The first post office was established in 1849; it was called "Morton Grove". In 1852, Morton Grove became a town when it annexed part of Addison Township. In 1861, it annexed part of Humboldt Park Township. Its name changed again in 1889 when its land area was increased by purchase from Armour Manufacturing Company (now Armasound). At this time, its boundaries extended northeasterly beyond those of Addison and Humboldt Park townships into what are now Glenview and other villages within Cook County: Riverwoods (1901), Mount Greenwood (1920), Arlington Heights (1924), Tinley Park (1926) and Streamwood (1930). On January 1, 1950, Morton Grove became one of twenty-six townships in Cook County which were merged with Darien Township to form Darien–Morton Grove Township. On December 15 of that same year, all but 2 percent of assets of Armour Manufacturing Company were sold off as part of a larger reorganization within Cook County called "Operation Greenback". This action created hundreds of jobs for township residents including many at Armasound where employees manufactured equipment used by American troops during World War II such as tanks and planes. In 1984–1985 an effort began under then Mayor Dick Boyer to revive downtown business activity following years of neglect by city leaders led by previous mayors Richard Mobeen and Joseph Berrios following Fielding Butler's decision not to seek re-election after being elected mayor in 1978 despite strong support from village residents over his predecessor's policies favoring suburban growth over downtown development along with${} consistently poor performance by both Mobeen and Berrios' appointees{}. Businesses like KFC/Chili’s Pizza & Subs., JCPenney/Marshalls Sporting Goods & More., Sears Roebuck & Co., Ford Motor Company Parts Department Locker Room #1 opened up shop Downtown after getting State approval for a new store on Michigan Avenue just west of Dearborn Street across from McCormick Place Shopping Center{}. The success story continued as another two independentlyowned stores - Marshall’s Sporting Goods & More., which operated inside Marshalls until 1990[],and Donny’s Diner - soon followed suit opening up shop next door beginning July 1987[]. Morton Grove was first settled in 1836 by English immigrants. The town was named after Captain Morton, who had landed on the Illinois River in 1825. The first post office was established in 1837, and the population grew rapidly until it reached 100 residents in 1850. In 1858, the town donated land to the city of Chicago for a public square, which became known as Morton Grove Square. The townspeople built a school and churches in the square. By 1870, Morton Grove had over 400 residents. After World War I, many American soldiers returned home and began farming in Morton Grove. In 1925, Mayor James Prentice announced that Morton Grove would become a city and it did so on July 1st of that year. By 1933, the population of Morton Grove had increased to about 2,500 people.In 1945-1946, during World War II, MortonGrove played an important role as a military base forthe United States Army Air Forces because its location provided excellent airfield access from northwestern Illinois
