The Mount Prospect neighborhood was founded in 1837. The first settler in the area, Isaac Morse, and his family came from Connecticut. They built a log cabin on the current site of Mount Prospect Elementary School. In 1838, the Morse family donated land to what is now Northwestern Illinois College, which consisted of three small parcels of land. The college opened in 1840 and soon became a major player in education in the Northwest Territory. Mount Prospect quickly grew as a residential community and commercial center. By 1860, there were over 100 homes and businesses in the area. The population doubled by 1870 and tripled by 1880. Businesses included general stores, lumberyards, breweries, distilleries and grocery stores. There were even two hotels – one called the White House Hotel and another called the Capitol Hotel – in Mount Prospect during this time period. Mount Prospect was also an important transportation hub for this region due to its location along Normal Road (now I-90). This corridor served as both an economic artery for Northwestern Illinois and as a way to move people between Chicago and other northern settlements throughout the Midwest region. Additionally, Mount Prospect's location made it an ideal place to build schools; many of these institutions were built here during this time period including Northwestern Illinois College (1840), Metropolitan State University (1850), DePauw University (1860) and Northwestern High School (1910).
