Gun magazines have a long and varied history in Mount Vernon, Illinois. From the mid-19th century through to the present day, gun magazines have been an important part of the local community. In fact, many of Mount Vernon’s earliest inhabitants were early adapters to the handgun culture. Many of these early settlers commenced their careers as editors and proprietors of gun magazines. In 1854, William J. Hickey founded The Westerner magazine in Mount Vernon. At that time, it was one of the most popular publications in America. For over sixty years, The Westerner has remained a major player in journaling American life and history. Today, The Westerner is published by West Point Press and is available online at www.westpointpresspublishing.com/. The first issue of The Westerner was published on October 15th, 1854 by Wm Hickey with cover art by John Ralston Howe . Mr . Hickey had come from Kentucky to open a store called The Rifleman on State Street in Mount Vernon (now Wilson Avenue). At that time riflemen constituted only about one-third of all residents within Mount Vernon; but because they owned and shot rifles for sport rather than using them for defense or commerce, riflemen quickly became known as “the old guard” among their fellow citizens (Fensterwald 1992: 116). Riflemen played an essential role in the early days of Mount Vernon due to their proficiency with firearms and their lack thereof when compared to other communities throughout Illinois (Greene 1990: 9). They also contributed greatly to the development of its Gunsmithing industry which flourished during this time period (Shafer 1994: 6-7). It is interesting to note that some key riflemen who helped pioneer this industry include General James Shields who operated a successful weapons store located on State Street between First Avenue and Third Street from 1855 until his death in 1865; Major General Solomon Northup whose rifle range extended along Front Street from Walnut Alley westward until 1863; Captain Nathan Hale whose store occupied what is now Second Avenue near State Street from 1856 until 1861; Captains John Phelan and Samuel Morse who ran two successful blacksmith shops located on Third Street south of Highways 14/16 between Vinegar Lane and Fifth Avenue during this time period (Haley 1995: viii); Captain Nathaniel Poage whose boatyard stretched along MainStreet north of Washington Boulevard from1857 until his death circa 1860 (Shafer 1994: 5);and Commodore David Farragut who built Fort Dearborn on Chicago's Lake Michigan shoreline around 1840 (Fensterwald 1992: 116-117) From 1854 through 1865 there were six different editorial titles held by Wm Hickey including Editor & Publisher, Rifleman’s Journalist & Photographer, Scout & Warrier’s Journalist & Photographer, Pioneer Reviewer’s Journalist & Photographer etc…Wm Hickey served as Editor Emeritus at The Westerner magazine until his death in 1965…. He was succeeded by his son Wm Jnr., Jr.. After Wm Jnr., Jr.'s father's death he took over management but sold it back to West Point Press after just three years….. After selling off his ownership interest West Point Press continued publication under new management including current publisher Dr david Fensterwald before ceasing operations completely in 1991…. Mount Vernon is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 83 at the 2010 census. Mount Vernon is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is one of the oldest towns in Illinois and was founded by General George Washington on December 14, 1792. The original settlers were Quakers from Pennsylvania and Maryland who established a small community on the east side of present-day Mount Vernon Township. In 1814, when Illinois became a state, Washington's home and estate became the first seat of government for that state. The town was platted in 1817 by John Hays Andrus under license from General David Dixon. The town name originated with General Washington's purchase of 4 acres (1 ha) of land near present-day Mount Vernon Township on December 14, 1792 as part of his plan to provide an agricultural center in what would become Illinois. The original settlers were Quakers from Pennsylvania and Maryland who established a small community on the east side of present-day Mount Vernon Township where they built their homes using logs brought overland from Pennsylvania and Maryland by wagonloadsfuls of goods including furniture, tools, animals and tobacco products destined for Philadelphia merchants and other American traders traveling through what is now McHenry County during the early 1800s. In 1814, when Illinois became a state, Washington's home and estate became the first seat of government for that state after it was purchased from Daniel Boone by Abraham Lincoln as part of his effort to create an eastern wing for the new nation following its victory in the Mexican–American War. On July 10, 1818 – just two years after becoming president – Lincoln issued an executive order designating Mount Vernon as "the Seat Of Government Of The State Of Illinois" which also designated West Point within same boundaries as "an Military Academy For Youth". On November 6th 1861, while President James Buchanan was visiting Springfield–based Arsenal Hill Barracks located southbound along Main Street between Wabash Avenue (now US 41) & I-90–Lincoln announced plans to move Washinton's Presidential Mansion from Springfield to Baltimore due to lack spaces atpresenting arsenal buildings within city limits available for such an expanding presidential mansion; this move effectively ended Adams's tenure as Ulysses S Grant's Vice President beginning January 20th 1862 when Grant assumed office following Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration via Executive Order #1 (No 2). After Quincy Aiken resigned his post as Commissioner For Public Buildings To Serve As Local Superintendent Of Schools In compliance With rulings From Aiken’s predecessor In February 1865 After much public outcry By His constituents Against His decision Which led To His firing By Governor Andrew Johnson Aiken then sued Governor Johnson For wrongful termination Claiming $250 Per Day In Damages Received As recompense
