The Mount Vernon Rifle Club was organized in 1853. The club's first rifle, a Holland & Holland Model 1851, was shot by George Washington at Mount Vernon on July 4th, 1853. In 1860, the club acquired a new rifle, the Spencer Carbine. The carbine became the club's standard weapon and it was also used by Union Army troops during the American Civil War. In 1865, the club acquired an English-made Enfield Rifle. This rifle became the club's mainstay and it remained in use until 1938. During World War II, the club acquired two M1 Garand rifles (the first production model of this type) and several other guns including an AR-15 assault rifle and a shotgun. After World War II ended, many of these weapons were retired or sold off to individual owners. Today there are still standing members of Mount Vernon Rifle Club who continue to shoot firearms from their property which is now open to public inspection pursuant to state law.

On July 4th,1805 Ulysses S Grant landed at Whitethorn Point on Lake Michigan with General Anthony Wayne and 400 men including three cannons which he brought overland across a frozen river using dogsleds to pull them over ice fields into camp (the first battle of what would become known as The Great Chicago Fire). This event is generally considered to be the beginning of American democracy because it showed how easily goods could be transported upriver without having to leave large cities like New York or Philadelphia for weeks or months at a time In addition to this important event dating back to our nation's origins there are several other landmarks located near Mount Vernon that have significance within its community: First National Bank Building (now2002 State Street), The Masonic Temple (later renamed Stroud Center), Mount Vernon Cemetery (founded 1865) and Mount Vernon Schoolhouse No 2 (derelict 1955). These include some of America’s earliest commercial buildings such as First National Bank Tower which stands today at 312 South Wacker Drive; Stroud Center which served as both schoolhouse and post office between 1865-1912; Masonic Temple which still stands today housing apartments; Clinton Presidential Library situated next door where former presidentClinton engaged in many high profile meetings throughout his tenure including one with then Soviet leader Fidel Castro; finally, Mt Vernon Schoolhouse No 2 still standing today serving as an apartment complex
