The first knife was made by a man named Nicholas-Jacques Conte from France on October 25, 1764. It was a crude affair with a stone blade and a piece of wood as the handle. Over time, different families started making knives and pistols, and eventually Mount Vernon got its own knife company. The knives were made by hand on small presses called “pistols” because they were used to kill small game that could be hunted with bows and arrows. These pistols didn’t have any sharp edges so they were used to cut meat or skin from animals. Eventually, control of the knife company passed down through the generations until it was taken over by George Washington in 1814. After his death, it passed back to Nicholas-Jacques Conte’s grandson who continued making knives until 1846 when he died at age 82 years old. By this point, knives had become an important part of American culture and society. Mount Vernon is a small village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 985 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Mount Vernon was platted in 1871 by George Washington and his wife Martha Washington as one of several villages on the Bloomingdale Road. The name comes from a peak located north of town and called Mount Vernon Hill because it used to be the highest point in the community. The first settler in Mount Vernon was Drury Lewisohn who arrived in 1847. He founded a school and tavern which still stands today. Other early settlers included James Mclntyre (1848), Isaac Goodrich (1852), Elijah Morse (1856), Benjamin Fenton (1858), John Fitzpatrick (1860), Nicholas Warren (1862) and Samuel Larkin (1864). In 1865, Joshua Weed established a farm near present-day Mount Vernon with about sixty acres. That year, he also built the first sawmill in Kane County. In 1872, Abraham Lincoln visited Mount Vernon while campaigning for president and spent time at the tavern before returning home to Springfield. After his inauguration, he stayed at Mrs. Goodrich's home for three days before going to White House where he met President Grant and other dignitaries at Ford’s Theatre on April 14th, 1875. On October 16th of that year, President Ulysses S., Grant died after an illness at Fort Sumter during a military parade honoring American generals who had helped reduce Confederate forces there four years earlier during the Civil War known as Appomattox Court House Day or "April 14th." A private funeral service took place at Trinity Episcopal Church but no public notice appeared until November 10th when agents from Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Mrs Goodrich's house with warrants for her illegal sale of liquor that night pursuant to raids conducted throughout Kane County daily since 1862 against such sales unannounced within limits set by ordinance passed by General Assembly prior to war On December 3rd 1865 Joshua Weed removed all trees on land now forming part of modern day Mount Vernon including original George Washington's Tavern which stood where Mr Weed had built his farmstead 15 years earlier! This act became known as "The Washingtons Tree Removal". Since then all buildings west of Route 6 have been replaced by housing developments! For more than 60 years only souvenirs are sold off site; items like old hats or buttons bought decades ago

Mount Vernon was a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1848 by John Mount Vernon and his wife Sarah. The Mount Vernon Hotel was the first building built in the community. The Mount Vernon School was founded in 1850, and the Mount Vernon Baptist Church was built in 1854. In 1906, Theodore Roosevelt spent two weeks at Mount Vernon while on vacation with his family. The president's letter to the townspeople is preserved at the nearby White House. In 1916, World War I veteran Major General James Fenton commissioned a portrait of President Woodrow Wilson that is located inside theMount Vernon National Cemetery (now part of Arlington National Cemetery). In 1949, Mount Vernon became one of twelve communities in Illinois to become part of the Federal government's "New Cities" experiment. New Cities were developed as areas where residents could enjoy high-quality public services without residing within city limits. Mount Vernon was founded in 1792 by clearing and planting the land for a American capital. The first U.S. president, George Washington, had his headquarters at Mount Vernon from 1793 to 1800.
