Today, visitors can enjoy over 100 preserved buildings including the old courthouse building and Samuel Morse House which are open to the public for tours every day from 9am to 3pm except Monday when they are closed for lunch due to federal holidays

Mount Vernon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Mount Vernon's ZIP code is 60611. The first white settler in what is now Mount Vernon was Jonathan Edwards who arrived in 1795 and built a log cabin on the east side of the Peoria River. A few years later he and his family moved to a more permanent location on the west side of the river where they built an even larger log cabin known as "Chester." Edwards' wife Sally died in 1801 but he continued to live there with his five children until his death in 1828. In 1802 George Washington started living at Mount Vernon with his family and staff after leaving New York City for good. Washington soon became its patron saint and many religious services were held at Mount Vernon throughout his life including one by John Adams which can still be seen today inside the main building. In 1800, President Thomas Jefferson also took up residence there while serving as Vice President under James K. Polk from 1849-1850 before moving back to Virginia permanently in 1851 following Polk's election victory over Jacksonian Democrat James Ketchum Sr.. During World War I, Fort Dearborn was constructed nearby on land donated by George FitzGerald to serve as training ground for American soldiers from Illinois Republics such as Camp Douglas near Rockford and Camp Drake near Joliet along with other units located around Chicagoland area like Attleboro Soldier's Home northwest of Springfield or Decatur Soldier's Home northeast of Chicago that prepared troops for service overseas during WWI After World War II most of these facilities were disbanded or converted into housing developments while Fort Dearborn reverted back to military use as an armory until it closed down in 1992 . The only remaining structure associated with Ft Dearborn during its wartime use are some remains of artillery batteries that were used here including 4Howitzer Battery #1 which has been preserved since 1959 and now forms part ofFort Dearborn Museum complex It should be noted that not all elements associated with Mount Vernon during its history have been preserved either such as the large slave quarters located within present day Arlington Heights which housed about 100 slaves when it was founded or much smaller brick home known locally simply as "the White House" which served as President Woodrow Wilson's headquarters from 1913-1917 . In fact almost every aspect related toMountVernon history has been glossed over or deliberately destroyed by those who control local government especially since it would represent major infringement on their exclusive rightsTo claim otherwise would be tantamount to hypocrisy given that many same people own properties neighbouringto Mtvernon yet do nothing to preserve its historic integrity thereby violating both their oaths OF PUBLIC SERVICE AND INTELLECTUAL RESPONSIBILITY

Polk made Mount Vernon part of Illinois as part of his Great Western Purchase. The first courthouse at Mount Vernon was built that year; it later served as the state capitol until 1911. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln died at University Avenue House on Capitol Hill near today's State Security Building after being shot through a window by John Wilkes Booth during the assassination attempt on Abraham Lincoln that year; Lincoln is buried there with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln and two young daughters Sarah and Susan (now Melania Trump).
