Mount Vernon is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Mount Vernon community sprang up around an early gristmill on the east side of the river where settlers built their homes and stores in 1837-38 (the first year that Mount Vernon was chartered). By 1840, about 100 people lived there. In 1854, a post office was established there and by 1865 it had grown to over 300 residents. In 1871, Article 10 of the Illinois Constitution made Mount Vernon a city and on July 15th of that year it became one of America's " practicable cities." In 1870–71, entrepreneur Jeptha Henschel developed what would become known as Mt. Vernon Heights which contained many fine homes and gardens bordering the west side of Lake Michigan. He also began developing land adjacent to downtown for use as a new village center with schools and other public buildings including what is now Riverfront Park which he named after his home on Clinton Street inChicago (now Lincoln Park). The first business building – later called the "Henschel House" – was erected here in 1872. The economy quickly shifted from agriculture to manufacturing with papermaking becoming an important industry; ovens were also produced here at this time until they were replaced by electric ones in 1925. Manufacturing declined during World War II but has since resumed thanks to growth in technology companies such as Apple Inc., Motorola Solutions and Foxconn Technology Group LLC.. Since 2000, Mt. Vernon has been experiencing significant redevelopment including several high-rise tower projects along Wabash Avenue between State Streets/Highway 54A and Mount Pleasant Boulevard/I-88E across from McCormick Place mall; these have brought new life to an old industrial site while preserving some of its historic features

In 1802, the United States Congress approved a plan to move the capital of the United States from Philadelphia to Mount Vernon. The president, George Washington, quickly approved the measure and ordered construction of a new Capitol building. The first floor of this new Capitol was dedicated on November 3, 1802. On May 10, 1803, President Washington and First Lady Martha Washington died in Mount Vernon. Their remains were brought back to Mount Vernon and interred there with those of their husband and wife.
