The Mundelein Commercial Historic District is a multiple-use district that covers most of Mundelein and smaller parts of neighboring townships. Mundelein was platted in 1834 by James Moody and others as an agricultural center on the banks of the White River. In 1851, it became one of nine communities in McLean County when it was annexed from Carroll Township. In 1872, Mundelein became a full municipality with a mayor and councilors; it had two voting districts but only one law enforcement officer. In 1916, Mundelein's first school opened when Kindergarten through Eighth Grade were offered for free to all children living in the township. A new school opened in 1951 after a $4,000 donation from developer Charles Wuerthke. The current high school building was built in 1965 and replaced an earlier wooden structure which had been destroyed by fire three years earlier. The commercial district that includes the high school has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.

The United States Census Bureau's 2000 census found that Mundelein had a population of 24,971. The population density was 1,531.1 people per square mile (621.8/km²). There were 11,591 housing units at an average density of 654.2 per square mile (247.3/km²). The racial makeup of Mundelein was 99% White European American; 0% African American; 0% Native American; <0% Asian; <0% Pacific Islander; 2% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 4%.
Mundelein is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It was part of the Chicago metropolitan area before its merger with the Illinois city of Elgin on January 1, 2013.
