In 1906, Palos Heights became the second city in Illinois to have a school with an optometric department. The first Optometrist in America was Dr. John Friesner of Chicago who opened his practice at 4th & Randolph Streets on the north side of town on October 1, 1906. Dr. Friesner is considered one of the pioneers of optical surgery and founded many medical schools around the world including Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine which he endowed with his fortune in 1978. The popularity of binoculars spread throughout North America during World War II because so many soldiers needed to see far away objects such as ships at sea or enemy positions from a safe distance while on duty or during wartime emergencies such as air raids or bombardments. By 1945, about 90% of Americans owned some form of Binocular/Optic equipment!

The population of Palos Heights was 753 at the 2000 census. The village was founded in 1892 by George W. Pool and his brother-in-law Daniel Hinsdale as part of a larger development called Village Green. The name comes from the Palos Hills outside of Chicago where George Pool had bought land in 1881 for $2,500. The first store opened in 1893 and soon there were two other stores followed by a bank, post office, schoolhouse (1895), garage (1910), library (1915), doctor's office (1920), brewery (1925) and homebuilders' enclave until World War II when all but one house were built on new land donated by friends or family members. By 1960 there were only five businesses remaining: four restaurants (the last three closed within five years due to economic recession) and the one black business which did not open until after passage of legislation imposing controls on neighborhood nightlife during prohibition era

Palos Heights was founded in 1868 by William and his wife, Sarah. The Palos Heights post office was first established in 1871. In 1870, the town of Palos Heights had a population of only 100 people. By 1880, the population had increased to 1,500 people and the town charter was amended to allow for township status. The original name for the township was "Huntington". In 1903, Palos Heights became a city and its mayor at that time was John Fenton. On July 1, 1933, Mayor Fenton resigned after allegations were made against him of bribery and illegal activities. He later plead guilty to one misdemeanor charge and served 3 months in prison. The next year on November 3rd, Mayor Fenton died from a heart attack while out walking with his dog. On November 15th of that year (1933), Harry Siever took over as Mayor of Palos Heights effective immediately upon Mayor Fenton's death. Siever continued to serve until he retired on April 14th of 1945 when he became board president emeritus with remainder period endingDecember 31st 1944
In 1892, Palos Heights Township was organized. The township was named for General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States in 1848-1851.
