Park Forest is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 16,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Park Forest is one of the oldest cities in Du Page County and was founded in 1836 as a village on the east side of Chicago. The current site of Park Forest was laid out on May 1, 1846 by General George Washington Kapp and his wife Lucy Kapp to be an incorporated town. On July 12, 1869, Park Forest became a city after voting by its citizens to adopt this status. In 1899, the City Council voted to rename itself "Chicago" because it felt that the name "Park Forest" did not accurately represent their community's history or culture. This vote reflected Chicago's efforts to become more diverse and multicultural through its annexation of other nearby towns and villages throughout Cook County during this time period. In 1908, park forest became home to World's Columbian Exposition which attracted over 180 million visitors from around the world making it one of the most successful exposition projects in American history. At that time there were no public transportation options within walking distance so many visitors relied on horse-drawn carriages or open wagons for transport home. The city experienced rapid growth from World War II until the late 1960s when suburban residents moved into what had been park forest territory. This change in demographics has led to some loss of historical architecture such as old brick churches and frame homes dating back to before Prohibition started in 1920; however overall park forest has preserved much of its unique cultural heritage since annexation into Chicago proper in 1898 Today Park Forest is known for its large variety of retail stores including several Sears Saks Fifth Avenue department stores as well as Urban Outfitters, Macy’s and JCPenney chains along with a wide range of restaurants including several Italian restaurants among others In addition there are numerous small businesses located throughout nearly every block giving each neighborhood their own feel while still remaining connected through major arteries like Elmhurst Road which runs through central PARK FOREST . Park Forest is a village in west-central Illinois, United States. The population was 1,001 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Park Forest was platted in 1868, and became a town in 1907. It was renamed to Park Forest Village in 1951. The first settler in what is now Park Forest was Levi Hargrave, who arrived on March 7, 1868, when his wagon hit a rock and overturned near present-day Harrison Road and Wellesley Avenue. Hargrave's family name is one of several that have been perpetuated through the years in Park Forest; other notable founders include George Ewing (1869), Moses Brown (1872), John Nesselrode (1873), Abram Grosvenor (1875), Solomon Goldsmith (1876) and John Fenton (1901). In 1907, after years of discussion between various governance bodies within the town of Park Forest – including a referendum held by the village trustees – it was decided that ParkForest would become its own municipality under new city charter regulations. The vote took place on December 12th of that year with all but one trustee voting in favor of incorporation while only two residents voted against it; those residents were then granted an exception to their decision so they could continue to hold office as village trustees until November 7th when they were given permission by city fathers to step down from their roles effective immediately due to newly created city limits which encompass much more than where they lived originally - making them ineligible for re-election as village trustees. On January 1st 1912, Mayor James Whelan offered annexation of portions of neighboring Randolph County - including parts of what are now North Aurora and Southworks Streets within what had once been known as Park forest - to make up for any lack of civic representation within the new municipality despite there being approximately 4x as many people living within its boundaries as there did within those currently residing within City Limits! In spite of this offer from Mayor Whelan - which included giving lands valued at $1 per acre back into township hands via eminent domain proceedings following annexation proceedings which were conducted without public input or notification whatsoever throughout much OF PARK FOREST during those early days following City Limits creation - annexation passed unanimously by an overwhelming margin with nearly all votes cast! On October 5th 1915, President Woodrow Wilson delivered his speech “Fourteen Points” before a joint session of Congress marking America’s entry into World War I; during this speech he dedicated areas surrounding Chicago such as Lawndale Heights and Cicero Hills namesakes after soldiers killed or wounded therein during that time period During his talk he mentioned how important it was for General Pershing’s XX Corps Headquarters located adjacent to Ford Field – just east/westof downtownChicago along Halsted Street – since no military forces resided insideCity Limits at that timeXXXXXXxx Although some gas Light Towers still remain standing today on properties adjoiningLawndale Heights & Cicero Hills namesakes even though these structures no longer generate revenue now like Mannheim Tower did back then due mainly because streetlight contracts have been won by companies like Google & Facebook insteadXXXXXXxx park forest history
The Park Forest community was organized in 1871 when a group of farmers and businessmen donated land to the town. The first post office opened in 1872, and the first school was built in 1875. In 1880, the town acquired another piece of property, which became its main streets and business district. Park Forest developed into a small city by 1920. In 1932, the city annexed neighboring towns of Arlington Heights and Villa Park, making Park Forest an official city. In the 1960s and 1970s, Park Forest experienced some growth as it became home to several large businesses including Henni's grocery store and Ford Factory. However, during the 1990s and 2000s, park forest began to decline as many of its residents left for better opportunities elsewhere. Today, much of the once vibrant community is deserted or has been taken over by surrounding homes or businesses.
