Park Forest, Illinois is a small town located in the Central Time Zone. Park Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a population of just over 10,000 people. The village of Park Forest was organized on February 17, 1889, as one of 36 towns in Cook County. At that time, it was named Franklin and had a population of about 1,500 people. In 1912, Park Forest became an incorporated town with a population of 6,500 people. Park Forest lies along the south side of the Chicago River and is bordered by Kane County to the east and DuPage County to the west. The village has a total area of just over 7 square miles (18 km²). Of this land, 5 square miles (12 km²) is land that comprises parkland and 1/4 mile (0.8 km²) is water at Clearwater Lake. The Village had three buildings when it was first organized: the Bank building on Western Avenue between West Harrison Street and South Prairie Avenue; Drury’s Pharmacy on Dearborn Avenue between Harrison Street and North Prairie Avenue; and Mrs. Ladd’s House on State Street between Dearborn Avenue and State Street East

The Park Forest area was first settled in 1824 by the Illinois Company. The town of Park Forest was organized in 1836 and named for President James K. Polk. In 1843, the general store in Park Forest was donated to the city of Chicago by its founder, John H. Richardson. The city annexed the Town of Park Forest in 1865 and changed its name to Chicago Heights in 1907. The City of Chicago annexed the Village of Park Forest on May 6, 1976 and renamed it Glenwood Springs.
