Park Forest is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 624 at the 2010 census. Park Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Park Forest were French traders and missionaries in the 17th century. In 1814, General James K. Polk founded San Jacinto Battlefield National Monument here after leading an expedition against Mexican forces near this site during the Mexican–American War. In 1836, John Fenton built a mill on the banks of the Sangamon River here which became known as Fenton's Mill because it produced flour for local markets. The first post office was established in Park Forest in 1850. One of its founders was Colonel William Prentice, who purchased land here from Jesse Wirths in 1851 to build a home and store called "Prentice's Grove". The community developed rapidly due to its location on a bend in the Sangamon River and its access to water supplies from several sources including the Des Plaines River and Lake Michigan. By 1860, Park Forest had a school, MethodistChurch (now First Baptist Church), public house and two stores. by 1870 there were three churches: one Congregational (later Episcopal) with 30 members; one Methodist with 150 members; and one Presbyterian with 25 members. During World War I, many farmers turned their attention to munitions production at nearby Fox Carbine Works but park forest remained largely untouched until World War II when mills closed down throughout Illinois due to wartime rationing regulations that limited flour sales to military forces only In 1945-1946 Park Forest saw increased activity as people fled Hiroshima after Japan bombed Nagasaki . A few businesses reopened following Japan's surrender but most residents went back into poverty during post-war years as new farming techniques failed to take hold outside of Chicago . In 1990-1991 more than 100% of all property within 1 mile of any major road was sold for residential development making park forest into what is now known as "the city". As single family homes replaced factories in central Illinois during this time period parks forest experienced significant gentrification which has led some residents

Park Forest is a small town in northeastern Illinois, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria–Champaign Metropolitan Area. Park Forest was officially founded on November 12, 1852 as a small farming community named after Dr. George Washington Park, who donated land to the town. In 1896, Park Forest became an incorporated village and in 2000 it became a city. The first settler in what would become Park Forest was John Morse who arrived in 1846 from Maryland with his family and plowed his land into what is now the downtown core of Park Forest. By 1850 there were only a few people living in the area around present day Cumberland Road and North Main Street because most of the land had not yet been claimed or surveyed for development. Dr. George Washington Park purchased some of these plots and established parkland on them which served as the town's first courthouse and jail (now known as Old Courthouse Square). Dr. Park also donated five acres to build Stemmons Elementary School, one mile east of where he lived on North Main Street near present-day Cumberland Road/Eveleigh Road intersection which opened in 1853 A primary reason for turning Deerfield Township into an incorporated village was to allow residents more access to education so that they could participate equally in economic development within their township boundaries In 1896, when Park Forest became an incorporated village, it had just over 1,000 residents Since then many civic improvements have been made including: new parks & playgrounds; numerous retail businesses including Gorman’s Fine Home Furnishing chain (now Macy’s); multiple restaurants including Wells Fargo Pizza; several large churches such as Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church; Porter Hospital located adjacent to Interstate 64 exit 214 As recently as 2000 much of this growth has been reversed with large numbers of residents leaving for other communities within Cook County or other nearby counties while remaining property owners . However even with this recent reverse growth rate , recent Mayor Jason Sheppard “states that if current trends continue then by 2027 [the population] will be almost 8500” according to "Peoria Journal Star" article dated January 16th 2017 There are several reasons whyPark Forest has seen consistent growth over time despite continuous challenges faced by many similar villages throughout Cook County . One major issue that Village leaders often face is lack of funding which leads to increased expenses without corresponding increase in revenue due primarily to tax rates being raised again & again without corresponding offsetting reductions elsewhere thereby resulting in ballooning liabilities & deficits . another challenge faced by villages like ours is frequently outdated zoning laws which limits our ability erect new buildings or expand services while also preventing any type of redevelopment or adaptive reuse ; finally but perhaps most importantly we have individuals who care deeply about their community but unfortunately do not always have enough financial resources available or desire/opportunity/accessibility to take advantage of these opportunities
Park Forest was founded in 1837 by George Barnes. The village of Park Forest was chartered on November 17, 1837. It became a town on February 24, 1850. On October 1, 1860, Park Forest was merged into the city of Chicago.
