In 1879, Pekin, Illinois was the first city in the United States to pass a gun swivel ordinance. The ordinance read as follows: No person shall keep or possess any shotgun, rifle or pistol which shall be able to be operated by rotating the barrel in a clockwise direction; nor any other weapon which may be used with respect to hunting or sporting purposes that may pivot on an axis within 30 degrees of the horizontal.

Pekin, Illinois is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. Pekin is named after Peeking or Peck on the south side of Chicago. In 1837, John Quincy Adams and his family moved to Pekin from Boston and opened a general store. TheAdamses were among the first settlers in what would become Cook County. Pekin was originally part of Blue Island Township. On February 14, 1847, following the opening of the Allegany Canal through that township, Pekin became part of Blue Island Township again when it was combined with South Side Township to form Pekin Township-South Side District No. 2 on March 1, 1847. The village boundaries were set at these levels: north boundary at State Road 46; east boundary between West Side and East Side streets; and south boundary between State Road 36 (now Cicero Avenue) and White Street. The first school in Pekin was built in 1839 by Solomon Brownell as an addition to his home on Park Row. It was enlarged in 1840 and added a two-story frame building for use as a church parish school house which still stands today on North Washington Street near First National Bank Building (now Wells Fargo Bank). After being closed for many years due to lack of students there began regular reopening during World War II as an Army Air Forces training station before finally closing again in 1951 because of cost overruns associated with construction projects related to Interstate Highway 55 (I-55). In January 1984 local residents organized into a group known as "The Friends of Indian School" which lobbied unsuccessfully for the property adjacent to Washington Elementary School (now Pleasant View Elementary School) to be used as an Indian school campus until that time it had been used primarily for dog walking services by owners of homes around its circumference while also serving as storage/sheds for various other activities including open air dances featuring community talent every summer until 1982 when it became known simply as "Indian School Campus". A new $15 million elementary/middle school building project started up around this time but quickly stalled out due largely to money difficulties unique among large public infrastructure projects such as these - problems that continue even now more than 50 years later! The city of Pekin, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John Stephenson and named for the pekin (a type of corn) that he grew on his farm. The city growth was stimulated by the opening of the Erie Canal in 1853 and the development of railroad transportation. In 1911, Pekin became an annex to Chicago.
