During World War II, Pekin was home to more than 1,500 soldiers who served in various military units based there including 159 items management company workers who were used to produce munitions plants at nearby Decatur Illinois munitions factories; these troops also helped local farmers with their crops while on leave from their combat duties; as well as housewives evacuated from bombed-out homes during early 1945. Postwar reconstruction followed with many small businesses established downtown such as hardware store/grocery chain Jumby's or drycleaning operations such as Dixie Maids until about 1970 when most disappeared because they could not compete against larger retailers outside city limits; however several high-end restaurants have remained since then including Bottega Louie Italian restaurant which has been operating continuously since 1954 adjacent to Stonington Mall although that mall has been closed down multiple times over recent years primarily due to development near it rather than competition from newer shopping centers.
