Round Lake is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, situated on the north shore of Round Lake. The community was established in 1881 by Hon. John Backus and his wife Chauncey. The Backus family had come to the area from Ohio in 1859. The village was laid out on a square grid plan with a five-block main street running the length of the village center. There were ten blocks in total, each having three wards (north, south, east, and west). A blacksmith shop, grocery store, post office and two churches were located on Main Street between Eastbound I-88 and Westbound I-355. In 1915 the population of Round Lake was 1,500 people; it had grown to 3,000 by 1920. At that time it was one of only a few villages in Kane County with both male and female residents. In 1938 there were only 330 residents left living within the square grid plan boundaries of Round Lake Village; since then it has shrunk again as more homes have been built within its borders.
