The village site was actually selected by Sieur de La Salle while he was exploring the Great Lakes region for L'Opinion du Roi et des Nantis (The Opinion of the King and Nobles). In 1814 Abraham Lincoln visited Schaumburg when he delivered a speech from memory before a large crowd at McCormick Place near Northwestern University. That year saworge Washington move into town from nearby Mount Greenwood as part of his effort to develop Northwest Side housing developments that would become known as "Washburn Heights". In 1865 American troops burned down much of downtown Schaumburg following General Order No. 10 issued by Ulysses S Grant during an uprising against Ulysses S Grant's command in Vicksburg Mississippi which began on April 12th that year. 4 years later on November 16th 1875–the day after Thanksgiving –Al Capone became one of America's first major criminal figures when he fledfrom Cook County Jail following convictions for tax evasion and other charges including murder within hours of being released from prison after serving time

The city was founded on November 6, 1846 by developers of what would become Cook County and was named after George Schaumburg, who had donated land for the town site. The first post office in Schaumburg opened on December 1, 1847. By 1870, the population had climbed to 2,500 and it grew rapidly during the early years of Prohibition. In 1920–21, with prohibition repealed and new businesses opening up throughout Cook County as a result of prohibition repeal efforts nationally, Schaumburg reached its peak with a population of 10,000 people. However due to aerial bombing during World War II (the bombing which killed 20 residents in 1942), Schaumburgh declined in popularity following that war; however it started to rebound in the late 1970s when numerous new businesses moved into town from outlying suburbs and began to reinvest money back into it both commercial and residential areas. The 1990s were also difficult for Schaumburg as many businesses closed due principally to changes within Du Page County government caused by then-County Clerk Linda Pappas's transformation from an open records advocate into an elected official beholden to large business interests - including those of her husband John Pappas - rather than more progressive values championed by then-Mayor Jerry Lewis or City Councilor Dick Riley Sr., who represented the more leftist ward majority centered around West Side Highway/Lake Shore Drive that made up much of Schaumburg's core constituency before becoming increasingly diverse over time as well (notably African American). Despite this ongoing challenge - exacerbated by increasing crime rates which have driven some residents out while others have turned against their high-crime community living conditions – overall economic growth has been modest except for a recent surge in development along South State Street which fronts Interstate 95 directly across South Lake Avenue; this area has seen significant office and housing construction over recent years culminating in a planned mixed use development called "South Loop" announced earlier this year[1]. Schaumburg, Illinois was one of the first towns in Illinois. The town was founded by Nicholas Schaumburg in 1809 as a small farming community on the north side of the Chicago River. By 1825, Schaumburg had become a major commercial and transportation center on the river.
