Schiller Park is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,500 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by German immigrants in 1854. The name "Schiller Park" honors Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, author of Faust and other plays. Schiller Park was incorporated as a village in 1872. In 1964, it became a town and has since been enlarged to its current size with the addition of the villages of Arlington Heights and Lombard. The first settler in Schiller Park was Heinrich Hohlwein who arrived in 1854 fromGermany and opened a millinery business on Main Street known as the Heidelberg House. In 1861 he married Clara Bechtoldt, daughter of Friedrich Bechtoldt, one of the founders of Peoria (now Peoria), Illinois. Together they had six children: Anna (1862-1941), Friedrich Wilhelm (1865-1944), Clara Elisabeth (1868-1949), Johannes Carl Friedrich Wilhelm (1870-1932), Alfred Hermann Reinhold (1873-1945) and Eleonora Rosa Augusta Hohlwein (1875-1964). In 1865 Hohlwein moved his millinery store to 380 North State Street which later became home tothe Chicago Tribune newsroom where he continued to operate until his death in 1951. Anna Heidelberg Hohlwein died in 1941; her husband died two years later on October 25th after suffering for many years from myocardial infarction brought about by overwork at his millinery store.
In 1964 Schiller Park incorporation formed an agreement with neighboring Lombard Township under which both towns would share water rights for their citizens within four miles of each other.
