Shiloh is a small town in Shiloh County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quad Cities Metropolitan Area. The community was named for General David Dixon Shiloh (1830-1903), an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. Shiloh's first settlers were Germans who arrived in 1836. By 1850, there were over 100 settlers in Shiloh. In 1881, post office activity started with mail being sent to Cairo, Illinois from Shiloha. However, by 1892 when the post office changed its name to Beech Grove Post Office, it had become clear that Beech Grove would not be able to keep up with demand for postal service so a new post office called Shilohl was built on State Street and became operational on November 3rd of that year. Shiloh, Illinois is a town in Shiloh Township, McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 596 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first recorded attack on U.S. soil took place in 1812 when an Indian band ambushed and killed three American troopers at what is now Fort Pitts in present-day Pittsburgh Township, McLean County. In 1814, two years after the fort was built at what is now Fort Atkinson near present-day Greencastle, Indiana Territory, another Indian band attacked and killed six Americans on the banks of the White River there. In 1818 a group of about 60 settlers from New England who had been traveling through central Illinois founded a small community called Mount Carmel on land that would later become Shiloh Township. The first settler to arrive in this area was John Forster and his family in 1821; they erected a log cabin and named it Mount Carmel after their home town of CarmELonetshire in England where Forster had been born some ten years earlier. A year later Forster married Sarah Woodruff and they founded a second settlement called Citizensburg which grew up around them until it was destroyed by fire in 1830; for his part John Forster left Mount Carmel with his wife and children to establish himself anew within Shiloh Township as its first white settler. In 1827 Amos Kendall settled nearpresent-day Timpfstown along Wabash River; he named his new community Kendallville after Amos Kendall's father who died young while serving as captain of militia during the war for independence against Mexico (1811 – 13). Years later another pioneer named George Stephenson settled just east of Timpfstown on Black Hawk Creek nearpresent day Peoria Heights; he organized a gang of 25 men to take possession of land grants made by General James Kossuth under the assumption that Native Americans were already living among them instead of occupying them peacefully like their European counterparts had done previously. In 1830 Stephensonand 15 others formed what became known as The Prairie Air Squadron which flew supplies into Chicago during the Great Fire Of Chicago (1871). One year before Stephenson organized The Prairie Air Squadron he had also founded the village of Aurora located about northeast of Shiloh on State Road 508 between Murphysboro Road and Pekin Road; Aurora became one of America's first planned towns when it was platted by Daniel Hinshaw & Sons company merchants on May 12th, 1837 following a grant from General James Kossuth.. Aurora soon developed into one of Illinois' most important cities with over 10 thousand residents by 1850 when its city limits were extended to encompass all or portions thereof including present day Arlington Heights, Wheaton Hills and parts adjacent to Lake Mather northward to Bloomington eastward to Decatur southward to Belvidere westward across State Road 508 past Rockspring Park into northwest Cook county.. By 1860 Aurora had acquired over 25000 residents making it one of America's largest cities.. After being burned down by fire in 1865 due primarilyto thunder storms Kane’s Village re-established itself again nearby but without Kane’s name
