Shorewood, Illinois was home to one of the first rifle shooting ranges in the United States. The range opened in 1889 and was known as “The Rifle Range at Shorewood”. It was located on a small tract of land that is now part of the Shorewood Golf Club. The range consisted of two ranges with a total area of forty-six acres. There were three lanes for shooters to walk between the two ranges, and there were several targets placed around the property. The original rifle shooting range in Shorewood operated until 1927. During this time, it was used by both boys and girls as well as adult shooters. In 1928, an addition to the range was made which consisted of a fifty-foot long Erector set target tube. This target tube allowed adults to shoot from any distance away from their rifles. From 1929 through 1951, the range continued to be used by Shorewood High School students who would bring their rifles into school for practice during lunchtime. In 1951, Shorewood Golf Club purchased the original rifle shooting range from The Rifle Range at Shorewood company owners Mr. and Mrs. John Wohlgemuth and Drs./Mrs./Mr Lyle Neuman respectively. At this point, it became known as “The golf club” rifle Shooting Range or simply “theRange” when hosting tournaments or functions either during school breaks or league meets etc.. In 1984, ownership changed hands again when GNRA (Golf Association of America) transferred ownership from The Rifle Range at Shorewood company Ltd., which had been in business since 1889 to GNRA Inc., a non-profit corporation chartered in 1961 whose mission is To promote quality amateur golfing opportunities throughout suburban Chicago including but not limited to Shorewood Township….Today GNRA operates “TheRange” under contract with Lombard Hills Country Club which encompasses 585 acres including all 18 holes of championship caliber golf courses within easy reach…..Since its inception over 60 years ago “TheRange” has hosted more than 2500 events including numerous state championships…..

The Goodes began developing this land into what is now Shorewood by building roads, creating churches, founding schools and providing health care services to the local community. One of the most famous aspects of Shorewood's history is its involvement with World War II when it served as an important military base for Illinois troops during the war effort including performing combat missions against Nazi Germany on two occasions while also providing food and medical supplies to troops stationed there. Today, Shorewood continues to be a center for culture and commerce with many businesses located throughout its diverse neighborhoods including West Side Village, Midtown Southwark, Northwest Side Township Park & Recreation Districts as well as Northwestern University’s McCormick Place campus which anchors Shorewoods commercial district within walking distance of many shops and restaurants
