When Aurora incorporated on November 14th1836 under Section 8 (name change because city limits were expanded westward by 1/3 at time) its name became Sangamon Township after county seat; when Sangamon Township annexed neighboring townships eastward for political reasons during 1840-1848 Sangamon reverted back to its original name upon annexation into Cook County effective January 1st1849 subject to approval by state legislature reextending city limits due northward beyond present site line beyond Rockford Lake near present day Northwestern Road intersection; In 1893 voters approved an amendment changing town boundaries back to their original township form effective February 25th following a referendum organized by local businessmen chaired by Mayor Charles Wickerham after complaints from residents over excessive annexations within city limits during late 1880s while still part Of City Of Chicago
In 1827, the first post office was established in South Elgin. The town was chartered on Jan. 6, 1828 and named for General James K. Polk, who died in a military engagement in Mexico City two years earlier. The first store opened in 1830 and the town’s first settler was William Hemsley. In 1835, the Illinois Central Railroad arrived in South Elgin and the town became an important junction for the railroad. The population of South Elgin peaked at 100 citizens in 1850 but declined to 50 by 1870 due to lack of business opportunities and growth along other north-south railways.
