South Holland, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 6,269 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. South Holland was founded by German immigrants in 1848 and became a city in 1903. On October 1, 2007, South Holland merged with neighboring village of Holland to form a new municipality with 5,811 residents. The Dutch Reformed Church has been located in South Holland since 1795 when Rev. Hendrick Vander Meer established it as the first Protestant church in what would become Cook County. At its peak in the early 1800s there were over 100 people associated with the church who lived and worked on North Dearborn Street near present-day Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University’s law school campus. In 1847 Rev. Vander Meer sold his interest in the church to John Sutter who renamed it Sutter’s Congregational Church after himself and his son Captain James Sutter Jr., both pioneers of California’s Central Valley (now Fresno). In 1894 Reverend George Kapp formed “The South Holland Colored Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel” which served black residents of south central IL until 1948 when integration into white churches occurred throughout Cook County under state mandate through Ideals for Community Life (ICL). In 1893 Drifting Clouds Brewing Company was organized by Amos Brown from Mundelein, IL as an experimental brewery that produced beers made from cornstarch instead of water for distribution throughout northern Illinois; Brown eventually moved his business to Bloomington where he purchased a large piece of land adjacent to Pritzker Hall on McCormick Place on which he built five buildings including one used as administrative offices for ICL before moving again to married into wealth sufficient to maintain brewing operations until Prohibition put an end to beer production statewide effective November 3, 1933 CE: Drifting Clouds Brewery ceased production at its original site shortly thereafter due largely theretofore unenforceable liquor laws targeting breweries specifically while continuing sales off-license products such as root beer through numerous local importers prior to repeal In addition several smaller breweries continued operation following prohibition up until national prohibition ended December 15th 1929 CE: these include The White Horse Tavern Brewery (later White Horse Ale) operated by Harry Earle out of what is now occupied by The Chicago Club & Sportsbar; The Black Hawk Brewery operated by Henson Reeves out of a building formerly occupied by Wrigley Field Municipal Stadium; The Nite Owl Brewery operated by Ozzie Smith from just north east side of Soxwall Road between current day Randolph Rd./I-10/US 27 & Joliet Rd./I-57; Oneonta Brewing Company open late April - early October operating out Of Stateline Liquor store on US 36 between I-10/IL 76 & current day River Rd./IL 905) Oneonta closed its doors permanently around 1978 having failed within two years primarily because during prohibitionChicago had no designated night time beverage retailer legallly allowed under existing zoning regulations governing retail alcohol sales chicago had long been home to more than one hundred bars catering exclusively or mainlyto illegal gambling activities making it difficult (& oftenillegal) for small businesses like Oneonta Leisure Park District Superintendent Jens Klinghoffer said “It really didn't do any good [the brewery] because most customers just bought their own beer or wine directly from those places rather than go through us” . After repeal many smaller brewers reopened but only Whiteshine Brasserie continued operations outside of Chicago proper well into the 1990's essentially unchanged other than changing its name once - briefly becoming known as Brasserie du Lac Nationale before reverting back fulltime To Whiteshine

Today, South Holland remains an important cultural center within the state – with many residents still involved in local businesses and politics
In 1815, the area that would become South Holland was part of Illinois. The first permanent settler in South Holland was John Ennis, who arrived in 1816. He built a cabin on a small island near the current site of downtown South Holland. The first school in South Holland was built in 1825 by Reverend J.B. Cooksey. It was served by students from nearby Nauvoo, Illinois. The town began to grow around the school and other businesses, and it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the antebellum period. In 1855, the town incorporated as a municipality and changed its name to South Holland Township. South Holland Township experienced major growth after World War II when thousands of Americans moved into the township to work in manufacturing plants or service industries. The township has since been declining in population over the past few decades, but it continues to hold some cultural significance such as its annual cherry Festival which is one of the largest agricultural celebrations in Illinois
