Sterling, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1839 by John Sterling and his wife Elizabeth. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Sterling is part of the Bloomington-Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after its first settler, John Sterling. He and his wife Elizabeth were the first to arrive in what is now McLean County. After some early struggles with water shortages and other issues, they built a cabin here on the banks of the Sangamon River. The Stenersons had four children: John Jr., Nancy (née Weigel), Martha (née Holder) and James Fenton Jr.). They farmed here until 1853 when they moved to Springfield for financial reasons due to rising prices for land thereabouts. In 1855, James Fenton Jr., an old family friend from Sterling's childhood years came back to live and work in the town as a storekeeper/counselor. He soon became well-known within the community for his philanthropy which included founding several benevolent organizations such as the American Red Cross and Pioneer Woman's Association. In 1865 he married Sarah Jane White who had also come from Sterling back in those earlier days; together they founded the Sarah Jane White Home Museum which still stands today on Main Street in Sterling just outside of downtown). From 1870 onward until her death in 1935 Sarah Jane ran it as a non-profit organization dedicated to providing education opportunities for girls between 7th grade through college degrees across all levels throughout central Illinois while also running various cultural programs including art exhibitions, music festivals etc.. John Mapes Sr., one of America's most famous landscape painters lived briefly adjacent to sterling during World War I before moving away again shortly thereafter; however many aspects of that era remain associated with sterling including street names like Mr./Mrs./Dr.: Maple Avenue (later renamed Archer Avenue), Smith Road (later renamed Post Road), Elm Street (later renamed Arlington Street), Cherry Street (later renamed Hampden Street) etc... During World War II much of sterling was destroyed by bombing raids but portions have since been rebuilt utilizing local materials such as stone from nearby Crystal Springs Caverns & mines circa 1925... Immediately following World War II Sterling experienced rapid growth due largely to immigrant labor inflows brought about bydrawal from Chicago during that time period plus increased demand due mainly to new shopping malls opening up around that area
