A local flour mill closed its doors in 1935 but reopened five years later as Sangamon State Flour Mills Inc., one of the first large mills operated by a private company outside of Illinois while still within Cook County government boundaries. In 1961, Sangamon State Flour Mills merged with JBS Unionship Corporation which had been formed eight months earlier as a result of an agreement between JBS International Holdings Inc., owned by Japan's Kobe Steel Co., and American Harvester Co., owner of many sawmills across North America. At that time, JBS Unionship also became known as Chicago Boardwalk Associates Ltd.; today it remains part of Peabody Energy plc. For over 60 years since its founding on Park Avenue just north of Loop Drive (now Lincoln Highway), Summit has been home to both public school students from grades PreK-12th grade through 12th grade along with adults who are employed or contractually employed by those schools during any given day or week. In 1871, the first Illinois Summit College was founded in Summit, Illinois. It was a small school with just 10 students. The college started out as a training ground for teachers and later became a university. In 1925, the Iowa Wesleyan University join the Illinois Wesleyan University System. In 1929, the college established its own library which is still in use today.
