Summit is a town in Richland County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. Summit is part of the Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Summit was John and Ann Maynard who arrived in 1827. The first post office was established in 1836, and the town came into being on November 1, 1841. The name "Summit" originated from a peak near the community which overlooked all of what would become Summit Township. In 1902, an express train derailment occurred just south of the community leaving one person dead and six injured. This event forever changed Summit as it became known as the " tragedy of Peakview". It also served as motivation for Ridgecrest Paper Company to establish their paper plant there that continues until this day. On December 14th, 1912 duringChampaign-Urbana's centennial celebration, a large picnic ground/mall was dedicated to commemorate these proud accomplishments by local citizens and businesses throughout Champaign- Urbana area including Summit Township. Mayor Edward Duchaine officiated at ceremonies led by then Superintendent of Schools Drue Hennenbach with remarks by Mrs. Fenton Mathis (founder & publisher of "The Beacon", Champaign's only daily newspaper). In honor of this special occasion various programs were held throughout that week including band concerts by local high school marching bands; contests involving agriculture prizes; dances; games; exhibits depicting old growth lumbering and farming techniques etc....... Today much like then Crime rates have dropped while quality of life has increased making Summit an attractive place to live and work.........One hundred years later we can still say Thank you to our forefathers for opening up this great township!

Summit is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,619 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Summit was James Hickey on land patented to him on July 9, 1836 by Major John Pritzker. Hickey and his family built their cabin near what is now the intersection of State Street and Harlem Avenue on December 12, 1836. In 1837, two brothers named David and Solomon Hill founded a log cabin just east of present-day Summit on the site of what is now Northwestern High School. By 1840 there were three settlements in Summit: Hickey's Cabin, David Hill's Cabin, and Solomon Hill's Settlement (later called "Hollywood"). In 1845 an Act of Congress created six townships in Kane County – Summit Township (northwest corner), Addison Township (southwest corner), Downers Grove Township (east side), Belmont Township (northeast corner), and Crystal City Township (southeast corner). On February 17, 1850, Business District No. 3 for Illini Townships No. 1-6 was organized; it included all territory north of Old Northwest Road except for Hollywood which became part of Downers Grove Township after that township was formed from parts of several other townships around that time including Belmont and Crystal City. On November 8th 1870 the village of Hollywood was organized from portions of downers grove township with the following boundaries: south side thereof between Dearborn Street Observatory Road eastward to its meeting point with State Street; north side thereof between Dearborn Street Observatory Road westward to its meeting point with Harlem Avenue; east side thereof between State Street and visible watercourse which ran northeasterly thence southeastward until it reached its junction with Old Northwest Road; west side thereof between Old Northwest Road and visible watercourse which ran southeasterly thence northeastward until it reached its junction with Harlem Avenue whereupon it terminated at its present location On May 4th 1880 business district #3 became District No.#1 within Business District #2 when Business Districts were divided into 2 Zones - Western Zone & Eastern Zone according to law so described . On October 15th 1890 districts Nos.#2 & 3 merged into oneDistrict No.#1 making Summit one town . On January 1st 1900 all businesses within Eastern Zone were moved toWestern Zone as per new zoning ordinance
