Waukegan is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Waukegan" was derived from the Ojibwe word "waque", meaning place of settlement or encampment. The first Europeans to visit what is now Waukegan were French traders and fur-traders in 1679. In 1773, Waukegan became part of the British Province of Canada after its creation through the Treaty of Paris following the Seven Years' War. After American independence was gained in 1776, Waukegan became an unincorporated community within Cook County. In 1834, a post office called Waukegan was established at a location near today's Midway Rd., and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1892. In 1835, James Krieger founded what later became known as Krieger Mercantile Company on North Adams Street in what is now downtown Waukeganshire; this company grew into one of Illinois' leading mercantile enterprises for many years before folding during World War II. At that time organized religion still played a significant role in daily life here; services were conducted by ministers from nearby Hinsdale Park Congregational Church until 1955 when Lourdes Catholic Church purchased that property and built its own chapel on it – making this one of only two churches (the other being Christmastime Eve Temple Baptist Methodist Episcopal Church) to have such continuous operation within their respective communities across denominational boundaries throughout most of their history (the other being Holy Cross Roman Catholic Apostolic Prefecture located just northwest on Lake Shore Drive).
