Wood Dale is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Wood Dale may have originated from a pioneer settler's choice of location on the banks of the Wabash River as he saw wood that would be needed for his farmstead and lumberyard. In 1836, General James K. Polk called Wood Dale "the most beautiful spot on the map." The community flourished during World War II due to its production of munitions and other military equipment; however, since then it has slowly declined. The community was platted in 1837 by John Lillie and other settlers who had come from upstate New York after being driven out by Native Americans. They named their settlement after George Washington Wood (1762-1837), an American Revolutionary War general who had been banished from Virginia because he advocated independence for his native countrymen. As early as 1838, farmers were plentiful enough to start raising chickens and pigs, but limited access to water made farming difficult and unprofitable until railroads arrived in the 1840s. By 1850, when construction began on the first railroad through Kane County (the Erie Canal connected Chicago with Buffalo), business activities were booming thanks to increased trade with Illinois Territory (now Michigan) andIndiana Territory (now Indiana). While much of what became Wood Dale came about as a result of this growth—such as streets, churches, schools and homes—a portion also resulted from purchases by settlers or gifts from others including land grants or donations of property along the Wabash River valley between Cooksburg Creek and Mount Carmel Creek which later served as a dairy farmstead known as Major Crouch’s Farmstead until 1984 when it reverted back to Indian ownership under acquiring control by Forest Preserve District No 1 in 2002 In 1846 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of America Baby while living at Ebenezer House near present day Elmhurst IL; so this place has some history also!
