It was founded in 1847 by John Silloway and its first post office was established in 1848. In 1865, the town became a village and again in 1892 when it became a town. The current name originated with Milton Hershey who saw an ad for "The Village of Wood Dale" on a map and offered to buy it from the village for $1 million. The community purchased the land from Hershey for $2 million in 1961. Roosevelt, Johnson & Kennedy, and Ulysses S. Grant (the only president born in Wood Dale).
