In 1862, during American Civil War I, Confederate General Robert E Lee ordered his troops to burn down all bridges over the Sangamon River near Carbondale so that Union forces could not move reinforcements upriver to support their allies at Corinth Battle Ground. This action destroyed many homes and businesses in central Kane County and led to increased tension between Unionists and Confederates throughout 1865-1867; however, no damage or casualties occurred from this raid except for some broken windows reported by local residents afterward. The burned bridges were later rebuilt using salvaged materials from nearby private dwellings. The early 21st century saw significant growth within Zion due to both technological advances such as online shopping through Kmart/Walmart websites (the first such websites entered into operation in Kane County) starting around 2000-2001 (initially providing services such as purchasing groceries) combined with military Base Camp Kelly being located there from 2006-2009 directly adjacent to town limits gave much needed stability having never been experienced before or since then within any incorporated community centering inside City Limits of any Size ever even remotely close thereto let alone now limited only by two blocks wide main street width just outside city limits while new residential development continues unabated right up until current day including numerous high end luxury condos built right next door directly across mainstreet corner opposite KFC restaurant exactly one block away driving residential property values higher yet still limited by two blocks wide main street width
