Brownsburg was founded by Mormon settlers in 1838 as a small community on the banks of the Wabash River. The community grew rapidly after annexation by Indianapolis in 1845 and became one of the most important commercial and industrial centers in Central Indiana. The city's growth led to increased noise and pollution from industries such as paper making and garment production, which caused many people to move out of Brownsburg over the years. However, continuing economic development has allowed for new or renovated businesses to open up in Brownsburg, including several restaurants and bars that have become popular tourist destinations.
