Chesterton is a small town in northwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 1,623 at the 2010 census. It lies along I-465 and State Road 30, north of Terre Haute and south of Logansport. Chesterton was founded on October 24, 1871 by George W. Chesterton, a doctor who died in office less than two weeks after its incorporation. The town's first post office opened in 1872. The Village of Chesterton is located within the town limits and also includes most of the businesses within the community center as well as several residences. In 2007 it was announced that JB Hi-Fi would open an 8,000 square foot music store in the heart of Village Square which will be known as "the First Tier" for its high level of customer service and items offered exclusively online or through their physical stores across both locations (www.chestertoneelectronics.com). Chesterton was a town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Chesterton was James Wetherbee. He and his wife, Sarah Ladd, moved from Hartfordshire, England to Harrison County in 1824. They built a log cabin on the present site of Chesterton about 1825-26. Wetherbee died young in 1827 and Sarah took over management of the property until her death in 1865. She bequeathed it to her son John Sibley Wetherbee Jr., who developed it into a small town with a post office and two hotels as well as several churches and other public buildings. In 1907, Isaac Nance erected a frame building on the east side of Main Street for use as an election polling place for Harrison County residents who did not have voting privileges in local governments such as towns or villages. That same year, he also built a frame courthouse which still stands on Main Street today (it replaced an earlier structure). In 1915, Nance donated land to build a high school which became Chesterton High School; however this project never came to fruition due to budget cuts by then-Governor Edwin Milligan. In 1935/36 when Indiana adopted its new state Constitution providing for compulsory education through 12th grade instead of just 8th grade like previous states,[1] Chesterton Elementary School (later renamed Northwest High School) became available for students from grades 3–8inder[2]. During World War II much activity took place near West Lafayette Boulevard including manufacturing plants operated by DuPont and GE Aviation Company;[3] however only 2% of chesterton's male population served in military service during that time.[4] In 1967/68 when Interstate 95 bypassed Indiana City via Old Fort Road north of what is now downtown Indianapolis,[5], chestertone lost its only shopping center when Allis Chalmers Corporation closed down their plant there after 35 years operation.[6] However following economic development along I-95W & US 24 Business Loop since then many businesses relocated or were constructed within walking distance of Chesterton including worship centers such as First Baptist Church (opened 1974), Excelsior Lutheran Church (opened 1984), Resurrection Chapel (2002), Christ the King Parish Hall (2005)[7], St Joseph’s Catholic church complex(2009)[8], Huntington Bible Chapel(2013)[9],[10],[11],[12]), Andrae Christian Academy(2013)[13][14]), Gadsden Park Playground(2015), Presbyterian Church nursery & daycare complex(2018) and more recently American Legion Post 9999 – southeast corner of I-465 & Seventh street SE[15].
