Chesterton is a small town located in northeastern Indiana. The population of the town was 5,802 at the 2000 census and it hasshrunk over the years to 4,752 as of the 2010 census. chesterton is known for its annual Chesterton Festival which takes place in early August. Despite this shrinking population, Chesterton still features cultural attractions such as its renowned art galleries, historical sites and agricultural land. The first person to come to Chesterton was Will Rogers who spent his summer days here in 1884. He brought with him his friend JB Priestley and they founded a literary journal called "The American Mercury" here. In 1886, when Rogers died, the townspeople gathered to bury him on their property and he is buried there today. In 1898, Arthur Conan Doyle came to visit and wrote an article about Chesterton for "Spinster". Doyle also visited again in 1902 and 1903. In 1907, architect George Bancroft built a mansion here which served as both local government office and school until 1915 when it burned down. The current building was completed in 1920 by Edwin Grosvenor Marshall Sr.. It became the court house before being sold in 1967 to Dick Cheney's father-in-law Morton Blackwell who used it as a private residence until it caught fire in 1978 and was demolished. Chesterton's history began with two families who immigrated to the United States in 1848. John and Nancy Chesterton started a grocery store in what is now the heart of Chesterton. In 1863, they opened a post office and added a second store on Fourth Street. They also built a home on Fourth Street which still stands today as one of Chesterton's most notable landmarks. In 1868, JohnChesterton died suddenly from unknown causes and his wife Nancy continued to run the store alone until 1870 when she married Samuel Hodge Jr., an American planter from Kentucky. The Hodeses operated their business until 1888 when they sold it to Julius Sayers who ran it for thirty-six years before it was taken over by Mr. Laddan who operated it as a general mercantile store for fifteen years before selling it to George Gaskill in 1924. After Gaskill's death in 1929, it passed through several ownership changes before being purchased by Mrs. Anna Kistler in 1955 and operates as her present day business currently known as "The Chestertons". The first post office at Chesterton was established on November 3, 1868 under the name "Harrisonville", but changed its name to "Chesterville" on December 6th of that year after becoming established within Indiana statehood according to laws passed at that time Byzantine style architecture became popularized during this time with many new towns adopting similar designs including Chesterton which followed suit with its own variant Greek Revival styled courthouse soon afterward measuring 50 feet long by 25 feet wide with three stories high termed "Queen Anne Style."
