Gun targets have been a part of Clarksville, Indiana for over a hundred years. The first Targets were opened in 1881, and the business continued until 1984. Tarp Target was the first company to open an on-site gun range in Clarksville. In 1927, the old Post Office Building was donated to the city as a target range and shooting ground. Today, there are several businesses that offer target ranges in Clarksville including Paws Gun Emporium, Golden Gate Archers (GGA), and More Than Guns (MGB). The history of target shooting can be traced back to the Revolutionary War when British soldiers were forced to fire at Indian targets from longboats anchored in the river below Fort Harrison on Long Island. As early as 1776, troops practicing at Mount Vernon had used small logs for targets. A 5-acre plot of land next door to George Washington’s home was donated by James Clinton alias “Clinton of New York” in 1792 and became known as “Clinton Park” after him. One of the earliest public Shooting Grounds in America was located on White Street near present day Elmwood Cemetery east of downtown Clarksville according to one source. In 1881, entrepreneur Jesse Latham opened his original Targets store at 402 E Main St., now known as Old Fourth Ward Hallmark Store #2(now called Walmart). At that time it was one of only twogun stores west of Chicago open during peak hours(the other being H&H Armory on State Street which closed down around 1939). The Targets store continued until 1984 when it moved across town into new facilities at 1223 S Broadway which served as both our current facility and our old storage building before that became Our Lady Of La Salle High School! Sometime between 1926 and 1929 GGA opened their doors on West Main Street just south of US 421 north ofpresent day First Baptist Church off CR 375 WSR 722 just outside present day US 421/I-465 interchange! This establishment is considered to be oneof the oldest GUN Ranges west OF Chicago! It operated until about 1941 when it changed ownership multiple times until finally closing its doors permanently due to lack of patronage & competition from other gun ranges INCORPORATED BY THE GUN BARONETS OF AMERICA ON MAY 25TH 1951!!! MORE THAN GAMES WAS ALSO OPERATING IN THAT TIME UPSTAIRS AT 2ND AND WASHINGTON streets IN CLARKSBURY

The first white person to live in Clarksville was James J. Ritchie in 1814. He built a cabin on the banks of the White River and named it Ritchie's Ford after his father-in-law, James Robertson. The first post office was established in Clarksville on February 12, 1824 by Wm Higginson. A large cotton plantation called "the Burkitts" was located near Clarksville before being sold to Anthony Wayne in 1863. Wayne brought over many African Americans as slaves and used them for agricultural work on his plantation until 1865 when they were all emancipated and allowed to return home free according to law which then prohibited slavery again within Perry County limits. After World War II, much of what is now Clarksville wasIslanded with abandoned housing developments called "Granite Heights". Granite Heights has since been demolished but some foundations remain today behind the scenes of Granite Heights development that never happened because of a legal challenge from local residents who felt that their community would have thrived if it had not been for those abandoned buildings
