Connersville, Indiana is a small city in the west central region of the United States. It was founded in 1824 by James Conners and his wife Susana. The population was 24,647 at the 2010 census. The city is named for General Anthony Wayne Conner, who fought in the American Revolution and then served as military governor of Northwest Indiana from 1785 to 1787. In 1827, Connersville became one of five communities on the first wave of post-Civil War satellite towns set up by the Union government as part of Reconstruction. The area that now makes up Connersville was originally part of Logansport County and was known as Newburgh Township until it seceded from that county in 1836 and formed its own independent municipality, becoming known as Connersville. The name "Connersville" originated with General Anthony Wayne Conner, who fought in the American Revolution and then served as military governor of Northwest Indiana from 1785 to 1787 before moving to Terre Haute,Indiana in 1827. In 1829, he donated land to make room for a town site on what is now Mount Morris Avenue near present-day downtown Connersville. Connersville, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana that was founded in 1836. The town was named for Colonel John C. Conner who had settled there in 1812 as part of what would become Wayne County. The first settler in what would become Connersville was Gideon Gentry on October 3, 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on a hill overlooking the present-day town square and started to farm land around it. In 1840, Gideon's son Elijah moved to the area and began to plat out lots for sale around the new village site which included most of today's downtown area including much of Second Street between Main and Washington Streets (now called State Street). In 1850, Luther George Adkins came to live nearby and started trading goods with Indians along Wabash River near where he later built his millrace damselflake now known as North Market Street west of Third Street in center city Indianapolis . In 1861 Isaac Chamberlain arrived from Illinois with his family and set up shop northeast of Third Street near South Michigan Boulevard until 1865 when he sold his interest to David Edwards who bought him outturning all northwesterly on I-65 from Stroudsburg eastward into Indiana . That year also saw construction begun on what would become one block long Main Street NW (later renamed State) which bisected downtown by First Avenue NE before turning south onto Washington streets/State just south of Third Street/present day University Avenue NW when it became a national park boundary line between America East (now Eastern Ohio) & Northwest (now Western Ohio) states It wasn't until 1881 that businesses became centered around Lafayette Square NW (now inside University AvenueNW), soon becoming known as "Connersvillencity Row".
