Crawfordsville is a small town in Allen County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It was named for Alexander Crawfords, an early settler. Crawfordsville is located on the east side of the Kaskaskia River near its confluence with the White River. The first mention of Crawfordsville is from 1780 when John Williamson moved to this area and mentioned it in his journal as "Crawford's Fort." In 1809, Major General Lewis Cass described Crawford's Fort as being "a strong post on a eminence commanding all that river." The fort served as a headquarters for Indian Wars fought by the United States against Native Americans along the Kaskaskia River. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson also took up residence at Crawford's Fort during his campaign against Native Americans. The fort burned down in 1819 but was rebuilt and used until it burned down again in 1857. After that time, Crawford's Fort reverted to civilian control and lay idle until it was destroyed by fire in 1916. In 1902, Mrs. Alfred Ewing donated land to serve as a square farm called Ewing Square which eventually became Crawfordsville village center after she donated most of the land to that effect. A schoolhouse and other buildings were built on the square over time and many additions were made to include a library/community center (now known as First Baptist Church), grocery store/cafeteria (now known as Gresham’s Pizza), artist studio/museum (now known as American Music Hall), office building/health center (now known as Brownfields HealthCare Center) and more recently a movie theater (known now only as Red Roof Cinemas). When Crawfordsville village center opened its doors on November 9th, 2002 it boasted 5 acres of grassy parkland with tennis courts, playgrounds & a waterpark – making it one of the largest community-owned parks in America!
Crawfordsville was founded in 1794 by the family of William Crawfords. It became a town in 1836, and was named for General James Crawfords, who commanded the American forces at the Battle of Fort Dearborn. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, and by 1870 it had over 1,000 residents. In 1892, Crawfordsville erected its first courthouse. Development slowed during the 20th century, but increased after World War II when large industries moved to the area. The population reached its peak in 1960 with over 4,000 residents. Since then there has been gradual decline as many businesses have left or been closed down. Today there are only a few hundred people living in Crawfordsville.
