Crown Point is a small, unincorporated community located in Kosciusko County, Indiana. The population was 1,503 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne metropolitan area. The first settlers in Crown Point were Civil War veterans who had returned to their home state after the war and founded a small town on the banks of the White River. The original name for Crown Point was "Stroudsburg." In 1872, John H. Strickland donated land to build an academy which he named after himself and his brother-in-law, General Winfield Scott Hancock. The school became known as Strickland Normal School. In 1907, the school moved to its present location on what is now State Road 527 east of Crown Point. In 1916, King George V offered a grant of $25 000 for the construction of a college in India or any other Western country that could offer it for such an endeavor as would promote British interests there. A group of prominent American citizens succeeded in raising money enough to start Indiana Wesleyan University in 1917 with a primary focus on training clergymen for missionary work in India and China.
