Elkhart, Indiana was founded in 1824 as a small community near the confluence of the rivers Vandalia and White. The area had been inhabited by Native Americans since before European settlement began. In 1825, Elkhart was platted as a town and named after Captain Nathaniel Holcomb of the U.S. Cavalry who had died in an accident on what is now known as White River just east of downtown Elkhart. In 1829, the town voted to prohibition and adopted a constitution with this goal in mind; "to prohibit intemperance and vice" within its limits. A post office was established at Elkhart in 1830, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1959. In 1834-35, construction began on what is now the Sawmill National Historic Site which served as one of Elkhart's primary employers for many years; sawmills were built here from 1840-1870. The site also includes a number of buildings including a grist Mill (built 1840), blacksmith shop ( Built 1840), dairy (Built 1850), miller’s house ( Built 1850), store ( Built 1860), bakery (Built 1865) and other structures In 1847-48, violence broke out between local farmers and loggers over control of property north of town along White River; this led to the infamous “War on Timber” which lasted two years The first courthouse in Elkhart opened its doors on March 3, 1860 On July 1st 1890, fire destroyed most of downtown ELKHART when it collapsed from an intense heat wave that started around that time
Elkhart, Indiana is a small town located in the Elkhart County region of Indiana. The population was 4,191 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Elkhart were Frenchmen on November 3, 1789, when they set out from Fort Dearborn under the leadership of Colonel Pierre Marquette. They explored much of central Indiana before arriving at present-day Elkhart on November 9th. A post office was established at present-day Elkhart in 1814 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The first store in town opened its doors on December 10th, 1827. The first school was built in 1831 and operated until 1925; it was replaced by a new building which still stands today. Elkhart has seen many changes throughout its history including being a center for transportation during the dawn of industrialism with trains running through the community regularly; during World War II as residential areas swelled with soldiers deployed across country; and since then experiencing rapid growth as an agricultural hub with farmers creating large tracts of land around town for growing corn, soybeans, wheat and other crops. Today,Elkhart continues to thrive thanks to its strong community spirit along with its innovative business practices - such as being home to two largest wind turbines in Indiana - helping it become one of the leading communities within their industry statewide.

Elkhart, Indiana is a small city located in the U.S. state ofIndiana. The population was 11,716 at the 2010 census, making it the third-smallest city in Indiana. The history of Elkhart began with three settlers who arrived in 1799: Peter Sellers, John Nicholson and Nicholas O'Keefe. They cleared land and built a log cabin which they named "Hagley". In 1814, Mormon pioneers from Utah came to this area and founded Salt Lake City; as a result, Elkhart became known as "The Mormon Capital" for many years. The merger of two other towns – White Cloud Junction on the west side of town and Goshen on the east side – formed what is now called "Elkhart." In 1872, when Elkhart was made a county seat, its original downtown merchants moved uptown to new quarters at Third and Main Streets. In 1916–1917 (the depths of World War I), over 60% of all production for munitions in America was done in ElkhARTe; however due to prohibition laws then in place (and still applicable today), little or no ammunition ever reached European markets. Consequently, much local pride was lost when Prohibition ended more than 25 years later in 1933; however some local businesses did continue operations until after repeal.[1] Today's economy is based largely on agriculture with cattle being raised by farmers along with crops such as corn (maize) and soybeans (soybean oil). Manufacturing operations include engineering companies that produce vehicles for both domestic and export use;[2] computer equipment producer Dell Inc.;[3] several large retailers including JCPenney Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Department Store Company,[4] Radio Shack Inc., Wheat Ridge Ski Resort,[5][6][7] Dairy Queen[8], Old National Bank,[9][10][11] among others
In 1814, the United States bought land from the native Potawatomi people in what is now Elkhart County. The area was named for General James K. Polk, who had served as a general in the Mexican-American War and as Secretary of State under President James Buchanan. In 1835, John Marchand founded the town of Elkhart on land that he had purchased from the Potawatomi. The town was originally called Marchandville but was renamed after General Polk in 1868.
