Fort Wayne, Indiana was founded in 1814 as a small trading post on the confluence of the rivers Pee Dee and Kankakee. The site became an important military outpost due to its location near the mouth of the Big Muddy River, which served as a major supply route for American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1836, Fort Wayne was renamed Fort Wayne State Military Park and became home to the country's first state park. The city's growth led to its incorporation as a municipality in 1907. In 1927, Fort Wayne hosted the world's first international air show at Wright-Patterson Field. In 1861, during America’s Civil War, fortifications were constructed around downtown Fort Wayne to protect it from Confederate forces known to be planning an attack on the city. In 1865, when Harrison Gray Otis closed down manufacturing in Indiana following industrialization efforts across most of Great Lakes region which led to mass joblessness among working class citizens – including many locals who found work at local factories – Ft. Dearborn became one of several installations within Marion County used by Union troops during their occupation of Indianapolis until February 1st 1865 when all Union troops withdrew from Indy after Red Evans’ surrender at Tellico Plains (now Telluride). During Reconstruction era (1865-1912), Ft. Dearborn served as a garrison for African Americans manning various shops and services within town limits while white residents cleaned up messes created by black soldiers assigned hereto provide them with necessary goods; these days there are few physical reminders remaining of this time period other than some graffiti art placards still hanging around old buildings/streets near current day Ft Dearborn Park where young kids play today! After World War I ended hostilities through Armistice Agreement signed November 11th 1918 between US President Wilson & Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany resulting in German returnees occupying areas inside US Military Zone it reverted back under civilian administration pending demilitarization completed on September 15 1922 When complete all military installations throughout US were converted into Police Department & renamed “City Marshal” functions vested with new police chief appointed by Mayor John Doolittle effective November 3 1923 On January 1 1924 City Marshal Edwin Senga took office as first African American Mayorof any major city USA serving continuously until his retirement effective December 31st 1975 after more than 36 years service he will be succeededby Mildred Weems who has held that position since March 2001
