Frankfort is a city in central Indiana, United States. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 as Fort Dearborn by French traders and missionaries. In 1846, it became the capital of the new United States of America and continued to be so until 1789 when Philadelphia became the new capital. In 1868, the Indiana General Assembly moved Indianapolis from its original location north of Frankfort to become the state's new capital; however, Indianapolis never achieved much fame as a commercial or political center because it lacked good transportation links and was far from major population centers. In 1928, Frankfort became an incorporated city with its own government and began to experience increased development due to its neutrality during World War II (the city refused to take part in any military actions). The current downtown district was designed by architect George Hargrave based on plans drawn up by his predecessor, Adolphus Buschman; construction began in 1929 and finished in 1931. The first phase of development included four blocks south of Market Street between First Avenue and Elm streets—later called "The District." A fifth phase added two more blocks south of First Avenue between Elm and Washington Streets; this area is now known as "The Annex". The final phase involved adding a sixth block east of First Avenue between Elm and Washington Streets into what is now known as "The Park." Today, most people who live or visit Frankfort are either residents or tourists visiting one of several nearby cities that share close economic ties with Frankfort:Indianapolis (1), Terre Haute (2), Lafayette (3), Gary (4), LaPorte (5),and West Lafayette (6).

In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewing's forces attacked and burned down two stores located near wherepresent-day Frankfort stands; one store was destroyed by fire and the other by shelling from Union army cannons under General Ulysses S. Grant's command as part of Operation Crossroads which failed to achieve an end to hostilities before spring 1862 due to lack of support from high headquarters within Confederate forces After the war ended on April 9th 1865 with Union troops taking control of all but three southern Indiana counties west of Chicago (Vermilion County being exceptions), Franksville reverted back to its previous name: Franklinburg Township No 1 . On July 14th 1870 (just shy of 100 years ago), local resident John Burt donated land comprising most or all current downtownFrankfurt block bounded along State Road 350W (now US 27) northward to eastward; this donation forms much or all original core today of what is now known as First National Bank building plaza across Main Street east side facing State Road 350W - now home to numerous small businesses including several restaurants - southeast corner lot once occupied by Masonic Lodge meeting hall also containing vestry / parsonage rear wing attached northeast corner lot originally Lots 7 & 8 Trinity Episcopal Church lot between Main & Second Streets lots 5 & 6 Third Presbyterian Church lots 3 & 4 Masonic Temple lot bounded northerly by First Street on east side extending past present day Broadway Avenue thence easterly along Broadway Avenue until reaching North line about 2/3ths or full way beyond boundaries then following North Line further southwesterly until finally reaching limits mentioned earlier about 2/3rds or full way beyond boundaries . This donation formed much or all original core today [of what is now known as] First National Bank building plaza across Main Street east side facing State Road 350W - now home to numerous small businesses including several restaurants - southeast corner lot once occupied by Masonic Lodge meeting hall also containing vestry / parsonage rear wing attached northeast corner lot originally Lots 7 & 8 Trinity Episcopal Church lot between Main & Second Streets lots 5 & 6 Third Presbyterian Church lots 3 & 4 Masonic Temple lot bounded northerly by First Street on east side extending past present day Broadway Avenue thence easterly along Broadway Avenue until reaching North line about 2/3rds or full way beyond boundaries then following North Line further southwesterly until finally reaching limits mentioned earlier about 2/3rds or full way beyond boundaries . Frankfort is a city in Brown County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first peoples to live in Frankfort were the Pottawatomies and Potawatomi Indians. They started trading with other Indian tribes and selling goods they gathered from the region. In 1824, Alexander Hamilton built a small fort on the west bank of the White River near what is now downtown Frankfort. This fort served as a checkpoint for traders going between Indiana and Illinois. The fort was abandoned in 1833 due to lack of funding and it wasn't until 1845 that another small fort was built on what is now State Street north of Market Square. This new Fort Harrison served as a military outpost during the American Civil War and later became home to an armory used by Hoosier Volunteers militias during World War I before being turned into an airfield in 1941 when nearby Fort Wayne became an air force base. In 1868, Henry Clay Goodnight purchased land along State Street east of today's Market Square for $1,000 fromNRHP founder Isaac Newton Steele Sr.. Goodnight named his tract "Goodnightown" after himself because he wanted to ensure that all future landowners would share in its benefits including access to water supplies and reasonable prices for farmland (though no such rights were guaranteed). Goodnight also donated land across State Street from today's site of City Hall (now known as Old City Hall) so that citizens could pray there without having to go onto Government Hill which housed then-Statehouse buildings/the Capitol Building (now too large for comfortable prayer sessions). He also donated trees around town so people could enjoy nature while still living within easy walking distance of their homes). In 1870–71, Goodnight developed what is now Downtown Frankfort into one of America’s most successful urban renewal projects with nearly $5 million worth of private investment bringing new businesses, residences, churches and other infrastructure to town center – creating more than 100 jobs during its heyday (although much has changed since then). In 1898, Mayor John Tipton hired architect George Stephenson based on his recommendations to design a new city hall which he called "Indiana's Capitol." The cornerstone for this building was laid on July 4th 1899 by Governor James Maturen Haughton – making Frankfort one of just two U.S.-based cities ever awarded this honor(the other being Washington D.C.). The building opened in 1901 and soon became known as one of America’s most iconic public buildings – hosting such illustrious visitors as Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D Roosevelt among others over the years! With continued growth throughout prohibition era (1920-1934), downtown finally reached its peak popularity in 1951 when it hosted both Republican National Convention & Democratic National Convention! However even during these high times – much like today – downtown Franksport struggled financially due largely to Prohibition-era neglect which continues unabated to this day; despite recent efforts by various entities including Mayor Ballard & City Council members Jeff Godfrey & Tom Hornaday!
