Franklin is a town in Delaware County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census. The history of Franklin begins with the early settlers who arrived there in the late 1800s. They were farmers and traders who built homes and businesses on the banks of the Des Moines River. In 1907, Franklin became an incorporated village when it amalgamated with other nearby towns. In 1930, Franklin was designated as a city by then- Mayor John Fenton because of its growing population and economic opportunities. The city's first mayor was Wanda Coleman (age 78 at time of her election). During World War II, Franklin served as a naval training center for Marines and sailors from across the Midwest. Since then, Franklin has developed into one of the most vibrant cities in central Indiana. It is home to several hospitals and schools including Eastern Nazarene University; KeyBank Arena; and NSCO Steel Works which manufactures electric locomotives and other heavy equipment for various railroad companies throughout central Indiana
