It is bordered by Noblesville to the east, Elkhart County to the west and Clermont County to the south. The town has a rich history dating back to 1824 when it was known as Harmonstown. In that year, General David Harney defeated a force commanded by Colonel John Sellers at what is now Fort Harrison on October 12th. Goshen continued to grow rapidly during the 19th century and by 1892 had reached its current size of 10,000 residents. The early years of Goshen’s growth were difficult due to competition from neighboring towns such as Elkhart and Huntington which had larger populations and better infrastructure. Goshen is a town in Clay County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Goshen was founded in 1811 by Colonel John Smith and named for him. It became a village in 1851 and a town in 1902. Goshen is located on the southern edge of Clay County and is bordered to the north by Stroudsburg Township, to the east by Huntingdon Township, and to the south by Warsaw Township. The Three Rivers River flows through Goshen. Goshene had a post office from 1811 until it was discontinued in 1906. The first settler in Goshene was John Smith who arrived with his family in 1811 from Kentucky. Smith's father-in-law, Rhoda Kline (née Fenton), also came to Goshene early that year. Other early settlers included James Laughlin and Samuel Nolen who both arrived about 1812; John Kemble bought land near where Gossen now stands around this time; David Ritchie bought land east of Gossen about this time; Alexander Sinclair built a dam across the Three Rivers River about this time; Henry Sheehan constructed an gristmill on White Pond about this time; and Nicholas Torchia built a log cabin on Main Street near present day First Baptist Church around this time. In 1821, Colonel John Smith erected a sawmill on Main Street which remained in operation until 1904 when it burned down due to fire set by local boys.; In 1840, Daniel Boone visited Goshene while traveling through Clay County along US 20., stopping at our old schoolhouse on White Pond Road just outside of town limits; after disembarking from his wagon he walked into town for dinner at Mrs. Kline's house before returning home via opposite streets (White Pond Road then ran northeasterly). After dinner he walked back out onto White PondRoad whereupon he met up with his Geological Survey colleagues Drs Robert Eads ( northwest corner of White Pond Road)and Isaac Hale ( southeast corner of White Pond Road) as they were walking home from exploring some nearby hills.... shortly thereafter Boone purchased property adjoining Whitespring Creek just northeast of today's intersection of North Third Street & South Fourth Avenue including much valuable land lying within present day Springbrook Cemetery... About 1830 or so Reverend George Hennepin moved from Bloomington overland to northern Clay County - probably looking for new opportunities for agriculture - moving west off US 20 past Springbrook Cemetery into what is now known as East Goshen ; according to one source Reverend Hennepin may have been personal friend/ patronof General Andrew Jackson during their joint campaign against Indian Chief Josephine when Jackson made an appearance several miles awayabouts two miles SW of Springbrook Cemetery........... By 1860 there were 830 people living within present day boundaries of Goshentown limits.......
